Simons Summer Research Program

dododo121: How didn't you get the project you wanted (I mean didn't we kind of specify our preferences on the app)? What kind of project were you looking for? Can't you ask them to change your project or something?

well it's also the prof. cuz i wanted to work with two people really badly (ojima and simmerling) but of course i get stuck with all the bad luck and they told me that their process starts in the fall, so i didn't get their placement and i got like 5 people who wanted to work with me, but i rejected all of them cuz they didn't give me the project i was interested in doing 9or was good for siemens and intel)

ohh thats too bad =( ... good luck with the other programs though!

I'm not going to lie dododo121...doing research for siemens and intel isn't really the best way to go about things. But anyways it's up to you, and I wish you the best of luck!

My overall experience: God it was the best summer of my life. I had some professor issues at first too - got paired up with someone from Marine Sciences, who was so nice but I wasn't terribly interested in shellfish; then I arranged to work with Dr. Chu, but Karen told me that I couldn't work with him if I wanted to be in the Simons program (?!); so then I got paired up with someone from Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, which I fell in love with :)

The research was definitely interesting, and although I wish I were allowed more independence (as in a say over what project I got to do, or how the project ran), we did a lot of different things and it was all very exciting. I didn't get much data in the end, but it was a good run.

Every week we had lunch seminars, which might have been interesting if I had gone (I ended up skipping out on them because I had experiments going on)...

Basically the thing that stood out for me the most were the people. Everyone was brilliant (except for me) - had been to ISEF, done Science Olympiad (I come from a school where it's like *** is ISEF) - and on top of that, played in their local symphonies or were in student government, all of that amazing stuff. You'd expect this to be like a nerd convention but it really wasn't, everyone was so chill! Everyone in Long Island is super-competitive, like their schools all have research programs and everything. Simons is actually something they have to compete for.

So there's not really much to do in Stony Brook on the weekends, and the housing stuff is really strict about leaving campus, but we still did, and we had fun! If I could, I would do it all over again.

Just got the mail from Karen Kernan, and yay! i got in! kind of a HUGE surprise, though...

She said they were waiting to palce me in a lab, so we'll c what i get!

wow the program sounds like a lot of fun, and a great experience overall! I am looking forward to meeting everyone this summer!

Can't wait to meet everyone!

I got in too! I'm really excited... But do a lot of people come from the NY area? what about out of state ppl?

I'm out of state

you guys all must be so smart & awesome! i wish i could RA or something. garcia actually has like student mentors, and two or three people will work in a group. simons is independent, and you get professors (well, more like grad students).

out of 31 people, 18 dormed and 8 came from out of state.

Eh, that's a bit disconcerting, especially if the campus is as restricted on weekends for those of us stranded there, heh.

Has anyone seen any solid information on SIMONS besides their actual website? I'm interested in the type of people who apply, who gets in, and just the program in general, and a few google searches failed to turn up much but a link back here.

So do a lot of people come from out of state? Cause I don't want to be bored during the weekends. BTW Barem if you want to talk to me to get an idea of how our stats compare since I got in as well, then feel free to PM me.

Where is everyone working (placement)?

Yeah, so who else got in? And which professor are you working under? Maybe we should make a facebook group or something lol.

hey guys - i got in to the program also, why dont we start a facebook group for the people who will be attending this summer?

by the way - im really excited for this summer, i've heard that this program is awesome!!

yeah we should start a group .. I will make it and send the link shortly!
