Simr 2010

I totally agree with you daahi! I kept on pronouncing SIMR as “simmer”. I guess we’ll just have to ask someone at the program.

They mentioned the online registration only online in fine print, would it have hurt to mention it on the checklist.

ohhhh I don’t know I didn’t think it was that hard to read…it was mentioned on the website as part of the deadlines and also in a couple of other places. I had a dream that my application actually didn’t get mailed in or something last night- it was horrible :/

Thanks, forblueskies! You’re lucky you also have someone to live with in Palo Alto. I live a little far from Palo Alto, which makes it hard to travel there. :/

Just how prestigious is SIMR? I don’t see it mentioned in the “Summer Programs That Look Good on College Applications” thread. Moreover, I heard some people who got accepted into this program didn’t get accepted into Stanford, and conversely some people who didn’t get accepted into this program got accepted into Stanford. Does it really help you in admissions?

Does being an intern really help you succeed in the Intel and Siemens talent searches?

No idea about any of the prestige. I don’t really care, it is an amazing opportunity regardless!

For future applicants; I definitely think essays play a part, but mine weren’t super amazing. Describing yourself in two double spaced pages is hard! For the diversity one, they aren’t just looking for cultural diversity. I didn’t mention my culture once, and basically just talked about what made me unique.

Well, yeah I still think they could have made it a tad more obvious, it was practically ‘fine print’, but I think I’m just gonna blame my own stupidity…not that I could have gone anyway when I live on the other end of the country…

is it just me, or have they not posted the list of interns yet?
(just in case they do right after this post, right now it is 11pm, pacific time)

From what I can tell, they haven’t posted a list of 2010 interns yet.

Just in response to an earlier post, SIMR is VERY prestigious. Obviously though, not as prestigious as Intel or Siemens. The acceptance rate this year for SIMR was well below 6%. (Over 800 applicants, 47 accepted.)

Getting into SIMR and not getting into Stanford? Of course a lot of people will get into SIMR and get rejected from Stanford and vis versa. SIMR is a great boost but the competition these days is so tough that you need several things like SIMR to get admitted. Plus, there’s other factors including: ethnicity, how many other people from your high school are admitted (they will deny this but it is true), location, etc.

On another note, I will be seeing you guys at SIMR this summer! :)

Congrats cadillac! I can’t wait to meet you :)

Which institutes are you all hoping to get into? I’m hoping for neurobiology or stem cell biology, but I’ll be happy in any of them.

I chose Immunology as my first, but I’d be happy with stem cell or cancer as well. I heard from a friend that people in different institutes will rarely see each other except for certain group meetings, though. :(

fairlights, I chose stem cell biology as my first choice, and neuroscience as my second!

hmm it seems I might have been the only one to choose cardio as my first. I actually want neuro now tho… I put it as third on my app before thinking it over. Oh well.

kjiggy, did you get in as well? :)

Yee, I got in as well.

Anyone get an email confirming their institute yet?

I got cardiovascular medicine, which was my third choice, but I will gladly take it.

I got the cancer institute, my second choice.

Incidentally, I also chose stem cells as my first choice. X)

Stem Cell Institute!

I don’t know how I’m going to make it through the rest of the school year. Too excited for this summer!
