SIMUW - free math program at UWash

Summer Institute for Mathematics at the University of Washington

The Summer Institute for Mathematics at UW is an outstanding 6 week, free math program for those who are interested. If I remember correctly, an applicant needs to have finished Alg 2. The program is selective for 5? states in the PNW. (There was also an attendee from AZ the year he attended, so maybe geography isn't such a big issue.)

My S attended this program after his freshman year which was really a life changing experience for him. For the first time, he saw the beauty of math, but had a lot of fun too. He continued to meet his fellow SIMUW attendees at various competitions throughout the remainder of his high school career which was always a good thing :-).

He also attended RSI (at MIT), as did at least one other SIMUW attendee.

He was also accepted to some of the top schools in the US and even one of his acceptance letters had a personalized note mentioning SIMUW specifically.

Application deadline is March 1, but the sooner the better.

PM me if you have any questions.

Sounds like a nice program. Was your son not interested in MIT after RSI?

LOL I didn’t say where he is currently attending :-). However, no he is not at MIT. He really sat down and spent significant time evaluating where was best for him and he decided elsewhere. And he’s extremely happy where he is. MIT could be his choice for grad school, but we’ll see. He’s got a few years to go :-).

I think I know where he is attending since we talked before. I just did not know he attended RSI. :p

I think that a lot of the opportunities that he’s had have been related to his experience at SIMUW, truly, as that sparked the interest and motivation and the knowledge that there is more than high school text book math out there!

(Yes I think that there are other math camps that will provide the same/similar experiences, but hey… 6 weeks for free? I don’t know of any of those out there except SIMUW!)

(Just bringing this back on topic :-))
