Since Nobody Knows The University Of Rochester....

Brief breakdown:

Located in Upstate New York, near canada. 2 hours away from toronto, and 6 hours away from NYC.

City is very boring, but still alot of cool people here.

Their music program (Eastman school of music) literally rivals the Julliard school. People from all over the world, including people like Suzuki, Perlman, YoYoMa, etc, come here to play/perform/teach. Medical school also kicks some major ass. Very close to that of a cornell science degree. For example, their neuroscience program is tops in the nation.

The guys you want to date are the ones who are doing MBA at the Simon Business School. They are all madd rich. The girls you want to date are from Eastman school of music. They are all trendy and extremely rich. Especially the international kids.

Everything else is pretty good. Not ranked, but still pretty good.

Thats it.

They have a really good med school, and a really good early med school acceptance program. They also just got a ton of money for biotech research.

A relative of mine, who did biomedical engg. at MIT, undergrad, is now at U.Rochester in the MD program. I guess it must be reputable for an MIT'er to go there?

Rochester is a very respectable university - especially in the sciences - and, of course, music. Tops in optics. Good med school. Good B-School (well-known for producing good researchers out of their PhD program). Used to be that they had one of the largest endowments in the country - due to Kodak and Xerox stock. Used to be that they were compared to Wash Univ St Louis on a regular basis, but for whatever reason (the weather?) their reputation hasn't kept up with WUSTL. Still...it's a really fine school with a pretty campus. Also, they have a new president this year - so maybe changes are coming. And the Take Five program where students can go a 5th year tuition-free is a bargain.

dude who operated on former president bill clinton's heart was a Uof R graduate

i like this school a lot. it's pretty darn high on my list

Is the campus nice?

not is nearly prestigious as you guys think. its a good school but shouldnt be compared to wustl nor cornell. U of R gets its reputation for the medical field because it concentrated all its efforts their, so it could get some recognition. WUSTL AND CORNELL ARE COLLEGES that are solid in everything and have one very very good program. U of R has a couple pretty poor programs such as in the social sciences program, so thats why it shouldnt be compared to those WUSTL and cornell.

umm i have to disagree vshang13, where are you getting your information from? Have you done -ANY- reading whatsoever on UR, or college for that matter?

1.UR has been around for a long time and on the same competing level of WUSTL, Cornell, and top tier Universities, offering a great deal. And where did you get the facts that it has a poor social sciences program? They are actually one of the leading universities in this field, especially for their small size, with their concentration not SOLELY on medical field, but spread out in sociology/education/politics/psychology/economics.
University of Rochester is number 27th in the world for Business, and 2nd for finance, with its renowned Simon School of Business. And i'm not pulling this out of thin air, here's the link <a href="http://rankings.ft.com/rankings/mba/rankings.html%5B/url%5D">http://rankings.ft.com/rankings/mba/rankings.html</a> .
<a href="http://www.econ.rochester.edu/Rankings.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.econ.rochester.edu/Rankings.html</a>
<a href="http://www.econ.rochester.edu/Pastgrads/placements.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.econ.rochester.edu/Pastgrads/placements.html</a></p>

UR also has a good political science department with world-renowned professors. I read at least 3 articles online about the professors at well established sites such as usnews, etc, saying that the PS dept had professors that frequently came up in publications and were one of the most efficient teams of professors in terms of research, writing books, etc. You'll find that the professors over-all at UR are regarded with great respect, as they were in the Top 10 list of Universities where professors know their stuff. Not only that, but the professors also do work and travel within the best universities in America, such as ivies etc. <a href="http://www.rochester.edu/college/psc/news/recent.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.rochester.edu/college/psc/news/recent.php</a>

2.University of Rochester also proves through their curriculum that they do not just "concentrate" in one area being medical field, as students are urged to take 2 clusters in the cluster system (except for engineers in the school of engineering who only have to take 1 cluster), with these clusters being from separate fields of knowledge different from the one you are majoring in. For example, if i was a bio-neuroscience major, i have to take a consecutive group of courses (a cluster) in humanities, and another cluster in the social sciences. Why is this? This is to offer the students a good well-rounded education in what they favor, so that way they can experience all the other fine programs and departments available other than the one they specialize in.
University of Rochester also has round the clock, cyclical publications and discoveries if you keep up with the science world and are informed. They recently discovered a new planet too, <a href="http://www.rednova.com/news/display/?id=112717%5B/url%5D">http://www.rednova.com/news/display/?id=112717</a>
UR has a great engineering department as well, ranging from biomedical sciences, to OPTICS. NOw vshang13, who has the number 1 optics program in the world? No sorry, not cornell, Rochester. UR has the number 1 optics program which supercedes that of Cornell, MIT, etc, as they house the world's biggest laser, omega laser. Rochester is also one of two universities in America that will be holding a fusion generator (something like that) with experimentation in order to set up a fusion plasma studies program. They are sharing this program with MIT,UCLA, and some other universities. <a href="http://www.doe.gov/engine/content.do?PUBLIC_ID=15958&BT_CODE=PR_PRESSRELEASES&TT_CODE=PRESSRELEASE%5B/url%5D">http://www.doe.gov/engine/content.do?PUBLIC_ID=15958&BT_CODE=PR_PRESSRELEASES&TT_CODE=PRESSRELEASE</a></p>

Finally, the new president of Rochester Joel Seligman was the former Dean of WUSTL law school. It marks a new change for Rochester, maybe to make more advancements and bring more recognition.

UR is a great school, and it upsets me that a random person would claim that it is lacking in areas except for Medicine. Granted, UR is well known for its awesome Science program (biology/chem/Neuroscience) and Med school, but it's also known for a plethora of strong programs. It would be a great disappointment to say that they are not on the same level of WUSTL and many other of the great universities of America, because it is. I strongly believe in the next couple of years UR will increase in recognition and ranking in a surprising manner.

and yes dstark - the campus is really beautiful, they have some really cool buildings and libraries, check out the site or go to one of those picture sites to get a taste of it. you can also check out the video in the site. If you guys need any more info dont hesitate to post.

ah yea i agree with Khan_Tim, Rochester is one of those schools that is not well known outside of academia. You don't go to Rochester for Engineering, you go for Optics, Economics, Medicine and Music.
Myself am really excited about the school. Hell, I was born at Strong Memorial Hospital and my dad got his PhD there in '88. A lot of the boardroom guys he meets with at his job (he's a medical chemist for a San Fran biotech pharma) are from the schools that he says are "typicals" in his line of work. Those include Cornell, Duke, Harvard, Yale, U of Rochester, Stanford; basically any school that is very productive in the sciences (Sorry, but MITer's and CalTecher's are only great in the lab). For sciences and medicine, U of Rochester is way up there. PLus their mascot is a yellow jacket, which goes around and stings things. PLUS they have tunnels under the school. PLUS they get like 144 inches of snow a year. sweeet.

haha yeah , the tunnel system is awesome!!!!

Rochester is a great mid-sized school with a pleasant compact campus. A number of the bus school faculty at U. Chicago came from Rochester. I think its biggest limitations are its location in Rochester, a somewhat isolated city that has come on hard times and not known as a college town, and its reputation for a lot of snow and long winters.

OTOH, they have pretty generous merit aid, and an undergrad degree from there will open any door you want for grad or professional school if you do the work.

For the thing about not good for engineering, I would say that Rochester has a very strong program in Biomedical Engineering... They have this big integration with Strong and also with their biology department... It is rated very well as well...

i'd love to apply to this school... i'm interested in dentistry =)

anyone know what the average SAT scores are for this school? hard/easy admission?

Average SAT is about 1250-1410
Admissions standards have supposively sky rocketed from last year to this year... Most likely the percentage of acceptance will be in the 20's now as half of the class has been admitted ED

I think that vshang got that opinion from the

"Only the Ivy colleges have any good programs, they are always number one and if I don't go there I'm an anonymous fool for the rest of my life"

opinion. But I just came in here, after reading the title, and saying "WHAT??"

so if i ED to this college next year, with like a 1400, i have a good chance of getting in?

whats ur GPA?

I am very interested in the combined medical program for U or R. I know that all BA/MD programs are very selective, but does anyone have any information on the rochester one, regarding its admissions, selection, etc compared to some other BA/MDs, like NW, Case, BC? Also, even if I do not get into the early med program, how is its regular undergrad pre med program?

It's premed program is one of the best...
Honestly since admissions are so different this year we can't tell what it will be like until after the new stats come out but I would have to say that it will be a tinsy bit lower than NW
