Singaporean connection

lol... yeah the site is not bad. a pity it is not updated very frequently - or is that an understatement...

Anyone from Singapore got in UC Berkeley.
Anyone rec'd acceptance from Princeton RD?

anyone going to johns hopkins in august? contact me at sneha_r87@hotmail.com

anybody here going to Brown this fall?

i'm going in '07....

monosierra: you're deferring?

yep. i'm serving time in jurong camp now. ORD in jan 07

i graduated from jc in 04....applied to and gt rejected by Chicago that year. pretty traumatic. but then i realized UoC was probably not the rigth school for me (couldn't answer any of their special essays)

after months of deliberation, i decided on brown.

gennie...
I doubt more than 1 or 2 Singaporeans will get into Princeton RD, I think they realised they took in too many ED.

what a small world! monosierra which jc and unit are u from? I'm from the same batch as u and i'm in jurong camp too! 3sig :) i could have gone to brown with u but i didn't manage to get a scholarship. i reapplied to brown for financial aid dis year but was denied. oh well, at least two other liberal arts colleges offered me nearly full ride!

monosierra: oh okay, my brother is in jurong camp as well, and is going to america in 2007 too.

the rejection was probably a blessing in disguise for you to find your right school. i actually applied to brown ED and was deferred because one of my teacher recommendation form never arrived and had to be sent 3 times, and only arrived on the day the decision results were announced. the deferral was a blessing in disguise too because the ED pool from Singapore was far too strong for me to get into.

ED pool from Singapore was strong? in my year i had the impression that it was very weak... but RD pool was strong. Hmm, what unit is ur bro from and where is he going?

One thing sad about going to a LAC is that u'll probably never meet a Singaporean... as compared to say, if I go Brown, I would have already bumped into 2 here! On top of those I already noe in sch... If only I were rich enuff to finance myself...

hmm, that's not true. i was accepted to vassar as well, and i know quite a few people who are going there. and i know quite a few people going to amherst, williams etc. liberal arts colleges do get singaporeans. in fact singapore is one of the countries with the most international students for vassar.

as for the strength of the RD and ED pool, well its varies i guess. or maybe cos we don't know the stats of all the people applying, its quite impossible to tell

my brother hasn't decided yet, still waiting for some admission decisions to come through the mail. and i dont know which unit, um i'll ask him the next time i see him.

haha right.

this camp seems to be full of scholars. 2 guys are going to chicago and stanford this year. one already left for brown. and if all goes well, my colleague will be going to rhode island school of design.....

So how many here are thinking of med school?

I heard it was practically impossible for foreigners to get admitted into US Med Schools, given the quota they set.

Granted there are singaporeans going to LACs, but that's an obvious minority. Except for one each at Williams, Amherst, Middlebury and Macalester, I don't personally know of any other singaporeans at/going to LACs. On the other hand, you have hordes of Singaporeans going to ivies and the like. Bottom line is, you will definitely be forced out of your comfort zone at an LAC, not having a lot of people of your culture and background to fall back on, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but definitely a challenging one.

And I'm not sure if I'm ready for that really, much as I want to go US. As of I last checked, there's not a single Singaporean at either of the two LACs (Bates and Conn) I got into. Well, there's an American at Conn who studied at SAS before - but I guess that doesn't really count.

haha talk about scholars... I saw a guy wearing MIT Class of 2005 coming into Jurong Camp when I was doing guard duty the other time...

haha i might be wrong. juz found a singaporean girl who's class of 2009 at Bates now...

shu_uemura: yeah, that's what I've heard too. However, I've also heard that if you do very well in one of the top schools, you're also more likely to get in.

But... i'll find out in 4 years.... :)

I'm in a similar position as visceral verve, but I'm considering Amherst as well. Anyone has experiences at these schools? They're all quite different I know, but they're all strong in areas I'm possibly majoring in: Econs, IR/Public Policy/Pol Sc. Hearing it from a Singaporean perspective would be good! Thanks!
