I seriously did consider NUS.. But I really want to go overseas for the experience.. I know its 9th in the world but I find it quite hard to believe.. From what I hear engineering is like the dumping ground... But that is not the reason why I am choosing to go overseas.I got into Columbia, UW-Madison and a string of UK Universities and am unsure where to go really.. Why would the US be better in engineering?

Why would anyone choose NUS over Columbia? I would have killed to get into Columbia College. =p

You are actually quite right about the assumption that engineering is the dumping ground in NUS/NTU for some engineering courses, but that really isn't the case for Chemical Engineering. Only the brightest qualify for this particular course. There's no particular reason why the US is better for engineering, though I'm venturing a guess that it's less specialised and you could get a minor in some other discipline (like economics for instance at Columbia). Are you going on scholarship? Depending on which university you choose, the cost could be different. Going to Columbia would be hugely expensive.

Haha yeah why would anyone choose NUS over Columbia... In terms of course offerings, NUS might be really strong. But a college experience is really more than just that? Not considering the cost factor, I'll say go Columbia. Not only do you get a more all-rounded education there, the prestige and the overseas experience (at one of the most exciting cities in the world) are something to die for.

No.. I was just trying to reply to those posts asking me to consider NUS.. If given a scholarship, I would have chosen to go to Columbia too.. But an ivy is too expensive for me and I don't want to be bonded by scholarships (I didn't think I will get in). So that leaves me with UK and UW-Madison and the choice becomes less clear-cut.. But Columbia is also my first choice dream-come-true college.. NYC, core curriculum and ivy rep these are things really worth dying for.. jeremy, have you decided if you wanna go to the UK or US? where are you going woe?

i'm probably going to connecticut college, if my amherst/williams waitlists and wesleyan freeman scholarship dun work out next year. i was in a similar predicament last year... got into brown and really, really wanted to go there. then i realize scholarships didn't really suit me either, i didn't want to get bonded and besides, there are very few scholarships for my prospective major (psychology) then. there's no way my parents can afford a brown education either. so i ended up applying financial aid to brown and several liberal arts colleges in the end. brown apparently rejected me after i asked for aid, so there.

depression_10,

go UW Madison.

Between UK and UW-Madison, head to Madison. Erm woebegone... I thought you wanna do computer science?

I got the letters from NUS SOC & Biz. I know it's really tempting. But go UW-Madison. I almost appiled but was a lil too late... go UW-Madison definately.

eh no, i never wanted to do computer science.

depression_10, i suggest either go NUS or Columbia. I mean, if u were to go UW-Madison, you're gonna pay more than 30000 USD anyway. Why not pay more to go Columbia? On the other hand, if cost is such an important factor, perhaps NUS is a better option. It seems to be getting better and better in terms of flexibility and study abroad opportunities, not to mention the courses which are definitely solid in terms of content.

Depending on which UK college you are considering, going to UW-Madison doesn't necessarily guarantee better name recognition. I would rather pay more and go to Columbia. It's expensive, but it will open more doors. UW-Madison seems to be more for biomedical engineering, judging by the number of A* scholars sent there. I confess I never heard of UW-Madison until one of my seniors went there.

depression_10, the money (my parents) has spoken and I'm going to the UK. It's much cheaper for me to go to the UK. I'll live my American dream when (if) I go to graduate school. =p

hello there...any Singaporeans entering University of Washington-Seattle this fall?

I'd recommend you apply to SMU as well if you want to do business. At least you'll have a relevant local option.

Your budget is USD16K or SGD$16K per year?

thks for ur replies...

usd 16k for tuition fees...which is probably applicable for unis of florida for eg, i've already missed the deadline for smu...and it's actually more expensive...bt my purpose anyway is for a chance to study abroad...it'll be an invaluable experience for me....i'm applying for early nxt yr...hopefully everying will go smooth...i know it may sound silly for me to ask...bt wat is the acceptance limit for uni of texas austin...i know it's one of the top-tier unis out there beyond my reach...

it's always harder for poly grads. well, do you mean 16k for the total of your University? Or do you mean 16k each year?
