Single Housing?

Any current undergrad want to elaborate on freshmen dorms...i.e. rank them in order from best to worst? Just wondering what to expect.

I hear good things about Wigglesworth. Maybe we'll get lucky this time and Harvard will have a shortage of students, thus enabling everyone in a setup like Wigglesworth (normally two singles and one double in a suite) to all have singles?

Man I can't wait to see what the dorms are like. I think I'm going to be visiting my friend's relative there at some point. Looking forward to that and that visitation thing at the end of April.

Not all of wigg is 1 double and 2 singles - I live in wigg and have 2 doubles but as a result a larger common room. Depends which entryway you live in and which floor (usually third floor has the 1 double and 2 single setup).

The best dorms are largely opinion but these are generally the most sought after:

Apley Court (wasn't open due to renovations this year, though I think they let some Katrina transfers stay there for the semester)

Grays

Weld

Thayer

some would say Matthews though the quality varies widely

least sought after dorms

Canaday aka "the projects" (rooms are fine - but it is the ugliest dorm built in the 70s)

Mass Hall (oldest dorm, rumor has it that they usually put those who are quiet/study in this dorm because the administration works in this building as well)

Greenough/Hurlbut/Pennypacker due to location away from the yard

The rest fall somewhere in between. Keep in mind, even in the best dorms you may get a bad room or in a bad dorm an exceptionally good room - it's all luck of the draw.

Thanks for the valuable info, chewy3. I am definitely making a note of all that.

hahaha! sailor, what do you listen to? I can certainly stand my share of Ayumi Hamasaki... :)

and yes, Apley Ct and Weld were always my favs...

I'm pretty terrible with it...yeah, Ayumi and Hikaru, Namie Amuro, etc. Which means it's doubly annoying to listeners of Japanese music, I would assume.

Availability of singles depends on the house you're in. Some of them have a lot of singles (Quad houses, Leverett) or single bedrooms attached to suites (Mather). Canaday, Greenough and Hurlbut offer singles to freshmen. Suites at Harvard are usually described as n, n + 1, etc., where the equation describes the number of rooms in the suite, excluding bathrooms, and n is the number of people. n or n - 1 setups are most common for freshmen; n + 1 is rare.
