Single Housing?

Does Harvard offer it? I keep looking on the website but I can't seem to find anything.

I'm not positive, but it sounds like they have a single option available for freshman. This is from http://hcs.harvard.edu/~queer/ and is talking about transgender students, but it says:

Unfortunately, some first-years may have to choose between living in singles and living with their assigned gender, depending or their surgical or passing status.

In some situations in the past, transgender students have been placed in singles if a suitable rooming group cannot be found (this is especially common for first-years due to the fact that they do not already know their potential room mates.

Maybe that means only transgender students get the option of a single, though.

Hmmm, now that we know how to go about it if we want peace and privacy..........

Haha. It's a small sacrifice for a single.

It might be a special thing, but to me it sounds like it's an option for all students. I couldn't stay for the whole tour because we had to be home in time for football, so I missed all this stuff. :)

lol I was there for the whole tour but I don't remember what they said about housing, I was too busy enjoying, like, everything else about Harvard :p Besides, wouldn't you want to have some sort of socialization in your dorm the first year anyway?

It's an amazing place, isn't it?

Yeah, I definitely don't want a single. It's part of the experience. :)

Depends on which dorm you get in. The singles are all attached to suites, I think.

If you request a single on your housing form you are likely to get it freshmen year - but it's harder to get as a sophomore in upperclass housing.

I thought Harvard doesn't offer housing requests?

You can't request a specific house but you can request how many roomates you want (which may or may not be how many roomates you will actually receive). Most do not request singles so if you request one you probably will get it.

Singles, meaning a single room attached to a suite, or a single room entirely isolated? Because I think most people would request a single room attached to a suite.

Well... you'll be fighting with your suitemates over the single, not with Harvard.

What a great way to start lifetime friendships!

Man I can't imagine living in a single...the main thing that strikes me about college life is living with roommates. I think that's going to be very interesting.

"Most do not request singles so if you request one you probably will get it."

Really? that's funny because my interviewer told me that if i requested a single, i'd most likely end up with 4 roommates... haha

though i've lived in a dorm w/ doubles for the past 2 years... it's not anything new for me... but i think i'd still like to be in a double next year :)

Requesting a single meaning isolated. If you request roomates you may get single rooms with a common room or you may not. I know of people with 2 single rooms and a common room (rare), 2 singles and a double, 6 singles ("pods") into a huge common room (I think this is Hurlbut - interesting setup but bad location), 1 double and common room, one huge double no common room (stoughton), 2 doubles common room -- and I'm sure there are some that I've missed. So as you can see the combos are endless.

Generally if you have 4 or more people you get a private bathroom.
People usually rotate (between semesters) into singles if the room has some singles and some doubles. Also, rooms that don't have a single can be made to have one if someone moves their bed into the common room - some like this and others don't.

In my case I got 2 doubles and a common room and bathroom.

Wait, are there communal bathrooms or are they in the rooms?

I guess I'm just shy. :) Don't get me wrong, I want to socialize. But...I'm annoying in private with my loud J-pop and sleeping with the television on and such. I suppose I wanted to be courteous to all would-be roommates. o___O

depends on which dorm/room you get - there are some of both.

As I said before usually rooms with 4 or more have their own bathroom - though, as always, there are exceptions...

I can imagine blasting your J-Pop would turn nearly all roommates against you. Good idea requesting a single in that case...
