Single Room Chance?

If I put down single as my first choice in my housing application, how likely am I to be given a single room??

If you can ask for specific dorms you can increase your odds … Dickerson and Balch (women) have a ton of singles on North campus.

it is spelled Dickson, btw. (just in case OP goes searching for it.)

You can’t ask for any specific dorm, except for all women dorm (Balch). Cornell has a lot of single rooms, so if you ask for one you will most likely get it.

Heh, I requested a double last year and wound up with a Dickson single. More people seem to want doubles for the sense of security in having at least one friend.

Though hopefully you get a CKB/Mews single instead of a Dickson one.

Thanks everyone! I guess I have a pretty good chance of getting a single then.

Which dorm is the best to live in (spacious, new, nice location, etc)??

^
Spacious? Balch.

Nicest? CKB and then Mews, but you don’t get to pick.

Balch is also the closest dorm to central campus (where all the classes are.) the downside is that it’s somewhat further from the dining halls, although still a <5 minute walk to either one.
Balch was built in 1929 but I don’t think that counts against it. in fact, it has a beautiful interior that would never pass a modern day budgeting committee.

I really think Balch is the best looking building on the outside. Reminds me of a quaint German cottage in a small village, especially at night.

I forgot to mention that I am a guy… so Balch is not an option for me haha

No, not so much. My son wanted a single in Risley (program house) and got a very small single. Risley has abundant small singles. A friend’s son wanted a double in a regular freshman dorm and got a single. His was a huge room. His mom was actually pretty disappointed. They wanted a roommate for him. There have been, at least in recent years, more singles than freshman who request them. Chances are very good for a single for a freshman.

Thanks so much!! I am so happy to hear that!
