Single vs. Double Dorm

What are people's thoughts on getting a single versus a double dorm? I was thinking about Tower C, which are all singles from what I can understand, is this right? As far as making friends and social activities etc... would a single dorm be a problem? I assume the whole floor is singles so are people on the floor close? Are the single dorms harder to get than doubles? Thanks!

The students in the singles keep their doors open when they want company–from what I have heard.

Hello,

I can speak from some experience on this. When I arrived at Pitt I was placed in a single dorm in Holland Hall. Then for sophomore year, I lived in a single in Lothrop Hall. I was a little hesitant to live in a room by myself, but it turned out to be a very good thing. In dorms such as Tower C, where every room is a single, everyone is in the exact same situation. They all want to meet their floormates too. So, people do leave doors open and socialize. The nice thing is that at the end of the day, you can retreat to your own room and have your privacy. A single may be tough in a dorm where you’re surrounded by doubles and triples, but in my opinion it’s great whenever everyone else also has a single around you.

Many student find themselves in less-than-ideal roommate situations during their first year, which can cause a lot of stress and other problems. You’ll be able to avoid all that by having a single. Though doubles can work out just fine too, if you’re with a compatible roommate.

I’m a freshman and choosing to live in Tower C was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Everyone on my floor is really friendly and we often leave our doors open so people can just stop by and hang out whenever they want.

But when I do want some alone time for studying or whatever, all I have to do is close my door and there you go, instant private oasis.

Meanwhile, quite a few of my friends actually had pretty lousy roommate experiences this year, which made me love my single even more.

So if you have the option, I would totally apply for a dorm in Tower C.
