Single with good priority number?

My daughter is a freshman in the honors program currently residing in Landis. She has a priority number around 230 and would like to have a single room next year, preferably in Landis, but would consider other dorms as well. She has been told that you have to have a documented medical condition in order to get a single. Is this true? Does anyone have any experience with applying and/or getting a single room?

Sophomores with a priority number of 230 have a great chance at a single. Most sophomores move off campus. I am not aware of any medical need for a single. Maybe that is what they tell freshman who have high numbers but an actual medical need, that you can overcome your high number only with a doctors order. But the singles in Landis and Gilchrist etc usually go to sophomores who stay in the dorms another year.

When current FSU students get the dorm renewal email, and the site goes live online, you indicate your room preference and your dorm preference. In the past you could indicate on the form that you wanted the single to be a priority over the dorm choice. I would have her go to housing after she submits her housing contract and speak with them as well They are very helpful. And I think she can be hopeful for next year.

Thanks so much for the info, Sunnyflorida. In addition to Landis and Gilchrist, does anyone know which other dorms have the most singles?

What about Ragans? Suites of 4 single rooms that share a kitchen/dining/living area. And what about McCullum Hall? They have single efficiencies, are upperclassmen only. One student is assigned to an efficiency apartment. Each efficiency unit is equipped with a bed, dresser, a kitchen unit, desk with chair, closet, study area and a bathroom. I believe parent2noles has or had a D in an efficiency in McCullum

Housing just sent email a few minutes ago about renewals, we have until March 1 to get requests in. Don’t have to rush getting request in now though because they use original application date from when we first signed up for FSU dorms for priority order.

I asked housing two days ago about the McCollum single efficiencies and I was told there are only 10 units, so it is a long shot getting one of them. Asked about Rogers Hall because housing site states sophs and up can get in and it is a month to month deal with cheap rent, but was told only jrs up can get in–too I think it is more for older students. I’m a first year student now, but I’ve got a low single digit priority # and might try for a McCollum shared unit or Ragans unit. I’m rooming with my friend from high school now–I’m not rooming with her next year!

Thanks, everyone, for the good ideas.

Where on the renewal form can I indicate that I would like a single room to be above hall choice? Right now I only see choices for hall preference or roommate preference.

I do see the box that says what type of room would be preferred, but I emailed housing and they said that your building preference goes above that (like if you don’t get a single in your first choice, they’ll put you in a double in that building.)

My daughter was told the same thing, so she requested a single but knows she might get a double in one her dorm choices. Housing said that she could always request a reassignment if she wasn’t happy with her placement.

It is my understanding that there are far fewer upperclassman than freshman, and that once you submit your housing agreement you can visit the housing office and explain that you have a preference of single room over any dorm choice, and they will make a note–NO PROMISES., and take that into consideration during the assignment process.

And there is A LOT of movement during reassignment so yes, many upperclassmen get what they want during this time.

For upperclassman, you used to be able to request a specific room. Is there still a place to put a room number?

how do I see my priority number?

I’m in a single room in Landis this year with a priority number in the 200s and have never heard that you have to have a medical condition to get a single. It’s not as easy to get a single (or any room) in Landis after your freshman year because they don’t have that many returning students in Landis.

Well, room assignments came in today and she got her single in Landis. Needless to say, I have a very happy daughter this evening :)

Just to clear something up…There are quite a few singles in McCollum, actually. They place singles under every 4-person townhouse. So, visually, say at the end of the hall is a single (like me right now!). The stairs are to my right. To the left of me is a townhouse style apartment. They have an upstairs which flows over their 1st floor and over me.

The McCollum singles are FANTASTIC! So any sophomores and above interested in singles should consider applying for reassignment asap  Feel free to message me if you want more specific info!
