sinks in room & communal kitchen

I was wondering if any of the communal dorms have a sink in the room and which if any have a kitchen on the floor?

Most if not all dorms have a communal kitchen on each floor.

Could someone tell me their feelings behind communal kitchens in the halls that have them? Are they nice or are they usually full? What do people usually do for meals in the halls that just have the communal kitchen?

i usually only cooked spaghetti on the floor stove and microwaved the rest of my food. most people eat out a lot, eat microwave food in their dorm, or eat things that don’t need to be heated up.

in retrospect, its kind of weird. i rarely saw people in the kitchen actually cooking stuff.

Does anyone know which dorms do NOT have a communal kitchen on each floor? And does anyone know if any of the dorms (not suite style) have a sink in room?

I guess but I’m not a huge fan of microwaved food so would that cause a problem from me in those dorms?
@Floridabound: the apartment style dorms are the only ones that have private kitchens for every 4 students and those are Beaty and Lakeside for freshmen. I’ve heard of Murphree having sinks inside of their rooms but I don’t know if any of the other dorms do.

So do all other dorms besides apartment style have a kitchen on each floor?

I’m hoping so but to be honest I’m not exactly sure. UF’s housing website is really vague about the kitchens at all of those dorms so that’s why I’ve been worried about the communal kitchens myself. Do you think it would be better off to get a meal plan instead of having to worry about the communal kitchens?

Every dorm except apartment style has a communal kitchen for the whole floor/section. Only the suites have a sink in the rooms. there are a couple rawlings rooms that have their own kitchen, but those are already full.

The kitchens are pretty standard. an oven, a microwave, sink, they do provide some cookie sheets though. I cook all my own food, and it’s not that dificult. I put all my ingredients/dishes in a tote bag, so I can carry it all down at once. How busy the kitchen is really depends on who is in you building, if it is a lot of freshman and people who just eat out of the microwave, you potentially have the whole kitchen space to cook. In my dorm the only time it ever gets full is around 6-6:30, because a lot of people in my dorm cook their own dinners.

As a freshman, I would recommend you try cooking for yourself for like 2 weeks, and if you can’t do it then get a meal plan. not having a meal plan really saves you a lot of money, but it’s not worth it if you’re gonna spend the year eating not so healthy, microwavable foods. plus, having a meal plan makes socializing with other freshman easier.

@glasswright: Ahhh thanks that helps so much! Also how do you feel about the communal bathrooms at the dorms?

I know Hume has a Snack/Kitchen Area, and a sink in each room. (:

As does the Murphree area and Springs. All suite style dorms have sinks.

the communal bathrooms are not bad at all. they are cleaned everyday, and there are enough stalls/showers that you almost never have to wait. it’s actually pretty good for socializing too. people strike up conversations all the time while they are on the way to the shower. I honestly have never understood why anyone would have a problem with it.

Just remember to buy a robe, a shower tote, and flip-flops or sandals.
