I have AP credit for PHYS 231, 232... but since to apply to med school I prolly need some sort of actual course in physics, I'm doing 2610 and 2620 .... but SIS tells me "you have already taken this course" and warns me I might not get credit for it. Wth?

there used to be a way to waive credit. go talk to your advisor

Well I don’t want to waive my credit… I just want to take physics III?

it’s like calc with 131/2 vs 121/2; the 161/261 track is different from the 231/232 track [UVa Physics - Information for Undergraduates](http://www.phys.virginia.edu/Education/UndergraduateAdvising/) so you would have to waive your credit or you could take a more advanced class
see option 2 here [UVa Physics Major Brochure](http://www.phys.virginia.edu/Education/Programs/MajorBrochure/)

I had the impression that 231 and 232 was just physics I and II.

okay so clearly you are not understanding, go in and talk to a physics advisor and they will tell you what i just told you. i can’t really do any more for you than what i’ve linked.

Well, hmm, what is a person with AP credit for the AP Physics C exam supposed to do if he/she wants to build upon his credit? Jump straight into quantum mechanics? What other courses would fulfill med school requirements?

I mean, I don’t want to be left “exposed” without Physics I or Physics II credit either. I need 231/232 as a prereq for p-chem and quantum chemistry!

If you have AP credit for first-year physics, you have a choice: 1) take the advanced standing credits for it, or 2) waive the advanced standing credits and take 261-262. 1) is good if you’re not going to be taking any further science (it will fulfill the distribution requirement), if you want to graduate early, or if you’re fabulous at physics and can’t wait to hasten into advanced classes. 2 is normally your better option if you are premed. But since you are giving something up, the powers-that-be in the dean’s office most likely figured you should talk to a human advisor about your options rather than doing this on SIS. I assume that’s why your registration isn’t working automatically.

I am an interdisciplinary dual major – I need Physics I and II credit as a prereq for other science fields (atmospheric physics/weather, chemistry, neuroscience, etc.) while progressing forward in a physics sequence. I really don’t get why AP Physics credit covers a whole sequence – shouldn’t it only cover Physics I and Physics II anyway? Who designed this?!

Can I waive AP credit after I finish a sequence just to ensure that if I somehow decide that 60 series is not my thing I have something to fall back on?

they list like 3 classes to take directly after 231/2 take one of those

But I haven’t taken differential equations … yet. I’d like to delay that for another semester. I took Calc III so I could take Phys III.

I guess I can take Quantum Physics I or Mechanics… right? Hopefully I don’t need to know too much diff. eq? (Other than the solution to y’’ = -ky, which is the most beautiful differential equation ever.)

Anything that prepares me for 80 series / honors P-chem, and later, Quantum Chemistry, is also good. I really dig the Schrodinger equation, but since that class conflicts with Biochem I have to delay that till my fourth year.

Also funny why you need all this calc but there’s no linear algebra recommended. sigh and the elegant matrix mechanics goes unnoticed…

Multicultural, you need to make an appointment to talk to the Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Physics Department. That person will have reliable information and plenty of advising experience with people in your situation. The DUPs generally hold extended office hours during registration.
