Six Colleges Overview?

I planning to apply for UCSD this Fall. I heard that you have to choose one of the six colleges when you do the application. I have no ideas whatsoever about the six colleges.

Could anyone give me an overview of six colleges and your opinions on which one is better?
I am Mechanical Engineering btw.
I currently attend Cypress College.

Thank you very much!

google. use it

CC’s search function is your best friend

I searched for it, but most of them are outdated. I found a few that from 2009 but most of them are like arguments between students, too many biases. I actually saw happyhappy’s posts from one of them.

I find it best to use multiple sources. Engineering quickly brings Warren into mind anyways.

Ask your college counselor if they have any advice. Mine gave me a little booklet with general overview/themes as well as GEs for each college.

Make sure you check the housing websites as well to see how new/old the dorms are. Warren for example are mainly composed of singles and triples so you might also want to take that into consideration if you wanted a double. Also if you want an ocean view, you might also want to put that into consideration as well.

I’m doing EE and i ranked mine as Warren, Muir, Marshall, Sixth, Revelle, ERC.

I actually checked a few threads. So far, Warren, Muir, and Marshall seem very popular. Muir is the most popular I think because it got the least GE requirement.

this is all my opinion:

easiest GEs:

  1. muir
  2. warren
  3. marshall
  4. sixth
  5. revelle
  6. erc

best dining hall: (doesn’t really matter, u can eat at any dining hall, just have to walk/take bus)

  1. muir (wasn’t open last year, will reopen this year)
  2. marshall
  3. erc
    4/5. warren/sixth
  4. revelle

best res halls:

  1. erc
    2-5. muir, marshall, warren, revelle
  2. sixth

can’t rank locations, will give summaries:
revelle - close to beach, pretty far from classes
muir - close to beach, closest to most classes, relatively close to center of campus (price center)
marshall - close to beach, pretty close to classes
erc - close to beach, pretty far from classes
warren - pretty far from classes, far from beach
sixth - pretty far from classes (considered the most isolated), far from beach, but closest to center of campus, closest to bus stops with buses that take you off campus

that’s all im saying. if u want more, use google or use the search function.

@ happyhappy

Your views on ERC are so bleek for me, a ERC student to be =P

don’t worry. i forgot to include some things cuz im lazy. erc has some decent things going for them, such as:

best res halls. they are the newest and they look the newest.

closest to i-house, which houses the international students and has the best/most parties on campus.

closest to rimac, the biggest/best gym on campus.

closest to the village, which is a little shopping area where you can buy groceries and stuff with your dining dollars.

this only applies if you are a guy - largest girl:guy ratio, probably like 3 girls for every 1 guy.

most ppl will say muir/marshall/warren as the top colleges at UCSD

but I will argue that muir is the best out of them all:

-has the best dining hall (used to be called Sierra Summit), it is undergoing renovation and will have a “restaurant” theme (it will be called Timbers -_-)

-has the most student orgs (around 30ish) = more student activities ==> more free food!

-close to the beach

-close to most classes

-people are super friendly (even tho this is a common theme at ucsd overall(

-we have the best college concert (muirstock)

-only two quarters of college writing (but can be arguably the hardest writing course out of the six colleges)

-easiest (“flexible”) GEs

-close to main gym (but rimac is the best gym on campus)

-res halls are made to establish communication between suites and houses (i dont know if other colleges do this… )

-we are known to be a “environmentally friendly” college (this is a pro if you are environmental geek ; ) )

sorry for the long list, obviously, i am a Muiron ; )

@ happyhappy

I completely take what I said previous back. Those advantages totally out weigh the disadvantages. =D

I’ll sum this up by saying if you pick any other college than Warren, you will be taking a lot more classes.

Yup. Warren has a different set of GEs for engineering majors. Plus they’re close to the engineering buildings.

There however are some cons from people saying its boring and lacks life. I on the otherhand tend to feel that college will be fun if i look for it (:
(incoming warren freshmen btw)

Why does everyone say that Muir has easier GEs that Marshall? Are they basing this on how difficult the GEs are or the number of them? Because from what I’ve seen, Marshall has the least quarters of GEs.

Just a few more questions:

Do we have our choice over which of the six colleges we going to attend to?

When will we choose them (before application, after acceptance,…) There are too much stuffs that going on between September and the next Fall like:

TAG,
IGETC,
Application,
Financial Aid,
Housing,
Sending Transcript,
Orientation,
Register classes,
Meet up with counselors for planning…

I really have to know when I do all of these.

wait so like what is wrong with sixth’s res halls. I mean I know they look bad on the outside like summer campy but is there something wrong with insides too?

no i lived in the res halls last year. there is nothing really wrong with the inside, its pretty much the same as everywhere else, just the outside looks gay as hell.

@JeSuis

It’s just whatever people’s preferences are. With Muir’s GEs you get more leeway to take the classes you want. Whatever works for you works for you.

@Ktran13

You’ll list your preferences for the colleges on your application.
