My D applied to SJSU for Fall 2018 and the acceptances haven’t come out yet. We read on the web site that students should apply for housing asap, even before being admitted because of housing shortages. Is this true? If she waits until next week when the acceptances come out, will that be too late?
My D is a freshman living on campus. The housing application for returning residents won’t open until March 5th, and I suspect that the application for freshmen will open after that. Last year the freshman application opened in late March. Acceptances should be out well before the housing application opens.
@DumbleDad thanks for the info. If I may ask, what dorm is your D in? Do you have to rank your choices? My D wants to get into one of the newer dorms, not “bricks.” I’m guessing it’s first come, first served? Also, does she feel like it’s a commuter campus on the weekends?
She’s in CVC, which is the suite building. I think that building is normally reserved for non-freshmen except in case of overflow, and there was a LOT of overflow this year.
Yes, in the housing application she’ll rank the housing choices, including building and single/double/triple. CVC actually wasn’t one of the choices on the list, we were asked on a separate page whether we’d be willing to accept CVC if it was made available to freshmen. It worked out well for my daughter because that was her first choice – she liked the idea of a relatively private bathroom, even though they have to clean it themselves.
The whole room-assignment process is a mystery. I suspect it’s done in batches, so the sooner you apply the better. There were a lot of freshmen this year who lived outside the 30-mile radius but applied late for housing and ended up on a waiting list.
My D is not the best person to ask about campus life on weekends. She takes the train home most weekends. I think it’s pretty quiet around there on weekends.
