SJSU vs. Cal Poly SLO for Computer Science?

which school is better for Computer Science program?
SJSU: Located in Silicon Valley, so a lot of internship opportunities
Cal Poly SLO: Great engineering program overall, what about computer science?

Both schools are excellent for CS and both will give you opportunities for internships in Silicon Valley. If you’re in San Jose already and have an apartment, it might be easier logistically to work there over the summer rather than move up from SLO.

The main difference is the campus environment. SJSU is an urban campus and housing on campus is not guaranteed. Cal Poly is located in a college town that’s very welcoming to students, with plenty of dorms and apartments on campus.

I’ve known CS students at SJSU who have had a hard time getting into the courses they need and ended up taking courses at De Anza instead. The students I know at Cal Poly don’t have any problem getting into their courses.

Look carefully at the CSE course requirements. Have you taken C or java before? You’ll have an easier time if you’ve had some programming experience before enrolling.

You were considering transferring in the middle of the year, is that right? Check on the CSUMentor site to see if that’s even possible at Cal Poly. You might need to finish 2 years at a CC in order to be eligible to transfer.

SJSU’s admission staff are horrible ! They don’t care of their students. Go to SLO if you get accepted. But SJSU’s Engineering and CS Dept is not so bad.
