Colleges send acceptance letters to far more students than they can actually fit in their class. They know that many students will decline and go to other schools. Sometime in May, after they know what their accepted list looks like, if there are still slots they look to the waitlist. I believe some schools have the waitlist students already “ranked”, while others start fresh and look at all the applications again. Occasionally a space or two can even open up later in the summer.

Colleges usually say something in their waitlist letter like, “feel free to send us any updated information”. You can do a search here on CC for advice, but essentially, if Skidmore is your first choice and you’d go there if admitted off the waitlist, you might want to write a short, polite note saying so. And if you have any more recent grades, awards, etc, you can send those as well.

Usually, not many people get in off the waitlist. You can look back at the Common Data Set for previous years to see how many. Last year, they let in 21 students out of the 430 who accepted a spot on the wait list. You should DEFINITELY accept another college’s offer and assume you’re not attending Skidmore. If you get in off the waitlist, you’ll likely forfeit your deposit to the other college.

Hi all, just hoping to clear up some facts about our decisions. First of all, congrats to those who were accepted, we can’t wait to see you in the fall! Secondly, all decision letters were mailed out on March 24, 2014 via the U.S. Postal Service (so some might still be on their way to you). International students receive an email decision and a hard copy letter. Domestic students receive a hard copy letter only EXCEPT for students invited to our Discovery Tour (accepted students of color, some international students, and students whose financial aid packages indicate that they might be unable to afford a visit to campus), so that we can make travel arrangements and plans for their campus stay. Lastly, this year was in fact, a record-breaking year for applications and decisions (though always tough) were exceptionally hard to make this year. I hope this helps with all the questions you’ve been having, please feel free to reach out to me with any additional concerns!

S was waitlisted and REALLY wants to go to Skidmore. Letter and insert that came with letter giving dates to call and speak to someone about waitlist have 2 different sets of dates for you to call. Each (letter & insert) says ONLY call on these dates! So which set of dates is correct? April 17 days or April 24 days? Also - what are chances of getting adequate financial aid if the slim possibility of being accepted off the waitlist actually occurs?

@staceyneil that helps a lot, thank you! I was confused about the whole deposit thing to another school, I kind of assumed that once I paid my deposit there was no turning back but instead I could just withdrawal and accept that I lost that money. Thank you for your very helpful answer :)

Received packet today! Accepted from Georgia with a 33 ACT and a 97ish GPA. It most likely helped a lot I’m from Georgia.
For those who were waitlisted, I’m probably not accepting my place (if that helps you decide whether or not to accept place on waiting list)

Ugh!! No mail today from Skidmore and we are leaving town in the morning for Spring break!!! Silly question but what do the envelopes look like for acceptances? Rejections? Waitlist? I may have my neighbor who is taking in our mail open it for us! I’m a bit concerned it hasn’t come yet…

Acceptances normally come in a big envelope while rejections and wait lists are just a thin small envelope. It is likely going to be hard to tell the difference between a rejection and a wait list.
