General Comments:
Yep, we need $$ and my dd is high stats, so I think there was some yield protection going on, too. My dd is quite disapointed; she genuinely loved Skidmore.
You mis-read – they have 710 spots; 11,000 applicants; they didn’t say how many kids they accepted – might be 4,000 in order to yield 710 students saying yes to them. My theory is that’s why so many were wait-listed – Skidmore figures those with financial need or higher stats are likely to go somewhere else, so they don’t want to accept them outright – that reduces their yield (the # of accepted students that choose to matriculate).
rejected
I am an international student who needs a full-ride scholarship to attend

Rejected. 1440 SAT, 3.85 GPA, first gen, strong extracurriculars

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 7. I think my CA essay was written well. However, the topic wasn’t anything special. I used the idea of tempo and pace and how that relates to various areas and activities of my life. I basically said that I’ve learned that slowing down is oftentimes the best option.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 8: My AP Stats teacher thought I was a good student and that I was helpful to other students like when they had questions or whatever. I’m also one of her TA’s this year. However, since it’s an online class, she’s never seen me in-person.
Teacher Rec #2: 7: My AP Music Theory teacher likes me/my personality. The class hasn’t been going on that long and it’s an online class, so that may not have helped.
Teacher Rec #3: 9: My French 201 teacher said she wrote a “glowing recommendation” for me. I didn’t think I was all that special in class, but perhaps she thought otherwise (or she made things sounds better in the letter maybe).
Counselor Rec: 10: She said all the nicest things about me. She’s known me forever and absolutely adores me. Talked about my character and included some stories as well.
Additional Rec #1: 8: Letter from choir director who I accompanied for. She absolutely loved me. She used to call me “Mr. Piano Man” and we knew how to work along together well. However, I get the feeling she isn’t exactly the best writer.
Additional Rec #2: 10: One of my other schools wanted a peer LOR, so I had my older brother write one. Since we’ve known each other our whole lives, he had very positive things to say about me and included some great anecdotes as well. On top of that he’s a fantastic writer.
Interview: Didn’t do one
Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Biology
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Homeschool
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $65,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Varsity athlete
Reflection: Your typical, run-of-the-mill white, male, middle-class, in-state college applicant, but also homeschooled and a potential varsity athlete.
Strengths: Academics, LOR’s, extracurriculars
Weaknesses: Essay, didn’t do interview
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think the fact that I’m multi-faceted may have helped. The swim coach really wants to build the swim team so that may have helped.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: So far, I’ve only been accepted to places. These are: St. Rose, Siena, Le Moyne, Cazenovia, St. Olaf, and Macalester
General Comments: I’m homeschooled in case you couldn’t tell! So my counselor is actually my mom. Her letter probably doesn’t hold a ton of weight. I don’t know how being homeschooled affects admissions chances and whatnot.
Something odd happened in the admissions process for me. I applied for the Filene music scholarship. I found out I wasn’t a finalist. However, a couple weeks after that, I get an email and a phone call saying I’m admitted and that I’m indeed a finalist for the scholarship. I think the swim coach may have asked them why I wasn’t a finalist and convinced them to change their decision. Since I was then a finalist, that meant that I was admitted. If this hadn’t have happened, I don’t know if I would still be admitted to Skidmore.
Waitlisted here. Didn’t submit scores, high GPA, three-sport varsity athlete, strong ECs, but no exceptional hook.
Waitlisted. 1500 SAT 3.8 GPA Interesting ECs. Applied for financial aid.
I totally get how you feel. I’m an international student from Kenya with a 1420 Sat and really good high school grades ( I did the IGCSE system) . However , I was in need of huge financial aid so I suppose that is why I got rejected. This is also my first decision back so I’m quite worried.
Given half are ED places roughly already allocated, and RD pool less committed, and more variable, will have a high placement rate on waiting list. Only 300 or so places for RD. Chances for acceptance are quite low.
Also got rejected
I’m an international student requiring financial aid so I guess that why :((
How many of you who are waitlisted are accepting a spot on the list? My daughter waitlisted too - her absolute top choice. The one guy who got in from her school (there were 6 who applied) is not even going - salt in the wound!
My daughter was accepted RD. 1420 SAT, 3.7 (w).
Good EC, interesting essay.
Also accepted at TCNJ, Rutgers, Dickinson, UMass, Binghamton, Marist, Scranton, Ithaca
Rejected at Northeastern (she knew it was a stretch)
Good luck to all as you receive offers and make decisions!
I’m not taking my spot on the list. It was one of my last choice schools, and I only applied on a whim. Guess they could tell I wasn’t interested!
My S was accepted! Very exciting…still waiting for the other schools before he decides.
If there are people reading this thread who are thinking of applying to Skidmore in the future and reading posts like “We couldn’t apply ED because we needed to know how much financial aid we would get”, we found the Net Price Calculator on their website to be very accurate. And when I had questions about it, their financial aid department went above and beyond to make sure I had done everything correctly. I am reading the stats from the kids being denied RD thinking “Yikes! I’m glad my daughter applied ED!”
@worldofwonder14 Yes, we’re going to the one on the 15th. What about you?
@MEA401 - you are correct in your assessment. Also, when a student is accepted ED if the family can show good cause why they can’t afford to attend they are permitted to withdraw the application. I don’t know if this applies to all schools, but families should check each school’s policy.
BTW, we are going on the 15th as well. Perhaps we can all meet!
