SKIING at DARTMOUTH

I know Dartmouth owns its own mountain. But can people tell me a little bit more about it. How far away is it? What are the runs like? Is there transportation to the slopes from campus? Are the lift tickets included in tuition etc. Anything else that you can think of. Thanks!

Alright, finally something I know a lot about and can actually be somewhat helpful.

The Dartmouth Skiway is ~20-25 minutes from campus in Lyme, NH. There are buses from campus during Winter Term Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at specific times (there's a website). These buses cost $4 each way (or you can buy a book of tickets and save some money). If you're involved in a PE program (as an instructor or student) then this is covered for you.

On Saturdays, there are hourly buses to the skiway, these are free.

The skiway isn't very challenging - there's under 1000 vertical feet, and there's only a couple somewhat steep pitches that can be moderately challenging. There are two peaks, however, so there is some variety (though not too much). Perhaps the best run is Worden's Schuss, where the varsity teams train GS. Gauntlet is also decently steep.

Tickets are $15 (i think) for students for the day, or $125 or $150 (i forget) for a season pass. Once again, if you're involved in PE (as a student or instructor), or with ski patrol, this will be covered.

There are, of course, places to ski nearby other than the skiway. Whaleback mountain is another small place that's pretty cheap ($15/day) and offers night skiing. Killington is close by (~40-45 minutes) and offers a pretty good season pass deal for students (~$350-400) if you enjoy the crowded slopes of Killington. Sugarbush is about 90 minutes away. Stowe and Smuggler's Notch are both about 2 hours. Gunstock is a little over 2 hours. Pat's Peak is a pretty small place that's alright around an hour away. All the areas around Conway, NH are about 2-2.5 hours away (Attitash, Cranmore, Black Mtn, Wildcat, Bretton Woods). Okemo's about an hour away if you enjoy crowded, flat slopes. Mount Snow's about 1:45 away. Mount Sunapee is about 40 minutes away, as is Ascutney. Jay Peak's only about 1:45 away as well.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few places, but, it's pretty easy to get there.
