skipping courses...

I'm a BioE major who took the city college equivalent to Math 53 junior year and received an A. I took the Math 1A and 1B equivalents sophomore year. I have been told by seniors at Cal to skip out of as many courses as possible, so I did not sign up for Math 53 in the fall, and I could not fit physics 7a, and am planning on taking Physics 7a in the spring and math 54 next year (I would like to take Chemistry 3a frosh year as the schedule plans it). However, I'm worried about being so rusty at calculus - when I take physics it'll have been 3 years since I covered the type of calculus that will be required of me, and when I take math 53 it'll have been 2 years since my last math class. I'm naturally pretty good at math, but at the same time that was all HS/CC math, which I know is a completely lower level than Berkeley math/physics, so I'm afraid that I'll have to spend too much time trying to play catch up. Should I take 53 again, or will I have ample time to review and get caught up in physics/math 54?

you wont need to know much calculus for phys 7a. it sounds like you need to get some classes in since you're not taking phys 7a, so i would suggest just taking math 53 again, just to get some easy credits.

okay, that's good to hear. i don't think i'm going to take math 53 again if i don't have to - i should be pretty full for this year because fall is 16 units already and next semester i'll be taking chem 3a and physics 7a already. thanks for the advice!

I really don't think you need to retake Math 53 as a BioE major. If you were going to be a math major or a physics major or something, I could see it.
