I am a BioE major, incoming sophomore, and will be taking summer school.

Classes I still need to take to fulfill lower div requirements/pre reqs:

E7
Chem 3A/AL
Bio 1A/AL
Physics 7A/B
Math 53/54
(& EE100 which I should take Sophomore year)

What I'm thinking is

Summer 11:
Math 53

Fall 11:
Math 54
Chem 3A/AL
Physics 7A
(E7/breadth/or nothing?)

Spring 12:
Bio 1A/AL
Physics 7B
EE100
(E7)

My issue is that my schedule for Fall 11 could potentially be absolute hell and I have no idea how to rework all this. Please help :(

why not take math 54 over the summer instead?
the professors for math 53 this fall 2011 are so much better
we have auroux, a professor from MIT… he is on leave from MIT thus teaching at Cal because of some personal reasons. but he is awesome. and his french accent is a +
also, frenkel is teaching the other math 53 lecture and he takes his time in lecture to explain everything. he even reviews basic techniques from math 1b to make sure the students are getting everything conceptually.

math 54 this fall, holtz and granbaum are teaching. i heard holtz is a bit tough… but granbaum is a bit easy! so overall i believe, math 53 will be “easier” because of the professors teaching it.

but your schedule for fall aint bad at all. chem 3a with pedersen should not difficult provided you do the assigned problems. physics 7a will depend on who will be teaching it. plus mastering physics will annoy the ***** out of you!

but your spring schedule will be the tough one though. bio 1a/1al will be tough primarily due to the lab. labs are so time consuming, the expectations and quizzes are tough but i guess they normalize or “curve” the lab grade towards the end. but still, bio 1al will be the one to watch out for!

Could you move Physics 7A to summer along with Math 53 or 54? Summer is half the length of a semester, so taking half a regular semester course load should not be too much of a problem. Then you can take Physics 7B in the fall so that you will not have to take three lab courses (lab course = more work) in the following spring. You can then also have the option of taking EE 40 instead of 100 if you are considering taking later courses that require EE 40.

E7 is a really hit or miss class. If you have any prior programming experience, it should be a breeze. In fall, its taught by MechE profs and spring is taught be CEE profs, so from what I’ve heard it’s easier in spring.
I agree with what neonseri says for math. I had Auroux last fall and he was absolutely amazing. Math 54 is very conceptual and most of the profs aren’t able to teach it too well. If you get a good GSI over summer, it will be a lot more bearable.
I can’t say too much about Chem or Bio though.
