Skipping First Day of College

@whenhen. My only job is the neighborhood gardener. My parents will not let me take a gap year. It is college or my ass is on the curb.

No it’s not, and that’s what I’m trying to point out. There are other jobs you can take, ones that have on site housing. Most of the jobs on Coolworks have that. You can be a self supporting adult if you want to. If not, you can try to pretend that college is like middle school where people will start drama, care where you are, etc.

If you do skip your first day of classes here’s what’s likely to happen…
You’re going to need to prepare for the second day of classes for the ones you skipped. Most professors start assigning work right away and you’ll be expected to have the texts and have done the reading before the second class. That means you’ll either have to go to the professor’s office and explain why you skipped class or track down other students in your class and ask them for their notes and a copy of the syllabus. If you haven’t attended the first day of class how will you know whom to ask? You may get lucky and be able to get all the information on line, but what happens if you get an old-school prof who doesn’t post the syllabus or who gives out critical information in the first class? As takeitallin points out, you may even be assumed to have dropped the course.

There is no one “first day of school.” Some of your classes will meet on MWF, some on TTh, meaning that even if you skip the first Monday you’ll still have to start new classes on Tuesday. If anything it’ll be awkward to show up as a new student on the second day. It’s a little like walking into a movie 5 minutes late. You may not have missed anything crucial but there’s no way to know that and I expect you’d end up with the nagging feeling everyone else has information you’re lacking.

I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but I’d be doing you a disservice if all I did was advise you on how to dodge your father. It’s just not worth it.

This thread is clearly pointless, so I am closing it.
