i went straight to ap chem without any basic chem stuff :P i had science 2.....

Thanks. I'm going to buy my school's textbook and study off that and buy some other review books to prepare.

My school doesn't offer Honors chem, so I skipped directly to AP.

Given the choice (meaning if I could have taken honors) I probably still would have skipped it, only because I dont have the time to take it first. If I'd, say, taken honors, this year, I'd have to leave AP until next year, which gives me no time to take bio, which I haven't yet.

Otherwise, I wouldn't skip directly. I was stunned at how much more difficult the AP material was than regular chem. Maybe I just had an easy teacher, but I highly doubt it.

Of course, the teacher I have this year isn't a very good one, to put it nicely, so it probably just comes down to the teacher and how much you know/like chemistry.

Ok...thanks :)

Similar situation:

I'm a sophomore who skipped regular bio to take AP bio despite criticism...it turns out, I got some of the highest scores in the class, and I'm almost positive I 5'd the AP test. Next yr most people take honors chem, would AP chem be reasonable for me?

the best chem textbook ever: Chang, 8th ed. it's about $120-140 off amazon. it was better than the textbook our school gave us, which i used just about once or twice to do the hw problems my teacher assigned. he personally likes the Chang one also.

barron's ap chem was absolute worst. it's lying next to my ap physics one, i haven't used either one. 5 steps to a 5 is pretty good also. from what i hear at least.

anyone? sdfsafe

depends on ur school. at my school, hon chem & ap chem are in the same year. if you feel that you're up to self-studying hon chem part and could still do well on ap chem part & the exam then go ahead. personally, chem wasn't that difficult for me cuz i took ap physics too and that was wayyyy harder than chem. it depends on your strengths. but i think you'd be able to do well in ap chem w/o taking hon chem.

If you already know alot of Chem then go for it. If you don't have a clue about Chem I definately would not suggest it... I learned all the basics of chem in honors chem which helped in Ap Chem. However, AP chem was still VERY difficult for me (mostly because i skipped the first 2 months due to transfer and whatnot) so I couldn't handle it after 1st semester (<- my first C ever..)

If you're going to self-study during the summer, you definitely can do it. :) I didn't learn that much in my regular chem class before AP Chem. My friend went straight to AP Chem with no chemistry background and he did pretty well in class.

bumpppppppppppppppppp

Wow. Thanks. Zachsta, I'm going to do it next year, but with some summer review also. Good luck to you!

I'm in a similar boat - I'm skipping Honors Bio and going straight to the A.P. Luckily (or unluckily most of the time), our school gives us pre-semester work to do for each class over the summer. This way, I'll already have bought my book, be a couple of chapters in before the semester begins, and have a feel for what Biology is like before it gets too tough.
Maybe you could ask the teacher for some things you can do before the class starts?

my school you can skip physics to AP physics B.
at other schools you take AP physics and AP Biology with out bio and physics

Bumpppppp!

I wouldn't skip it... I'm in honors chem and I know bunch of people taking AP, the teacher was incompetent for them. It's the same teacher, she teaches my class fine. BUt I think she expects them to know more, she explains stuff like once and then it's independent study. I know not all AP classes are like that but some can be... the teacher might just expect you guys to immediately get stuff that isn't 1,2,3 simple.

Don't skip honors chem. Honors chem sets a great foundation for AP Chem, without which you will not do well. The only sophomore in my class had a hard time keeping up with the work and struggled especially at the beginning of the year.

PS: Kinetics wasn't that big of a part of my class.
