I think I’ve stunted my growth through sleep-deprivation. I’m a procrastinator and there’s always so much to do, but then you’re tired and them it’s extra hard… It really is a vicious cycle. I go to bed no later than 2 and wake up at 7, it’s awful ugh

My dad always gets mad at me if I stay up late, like seriously, come on, I have so much work to do and if I don’t do it, I’m screwed. I really don’t have a choice here.

What I do is I usually go to bed an hour before my normal time if the previous day I stayed up too late. It kinda balances my account of time slept out week by week.

sleep? whats a sleep?

It’s a respite from a 100 hour workweek

Only a hundred? My my, you underachiever. :)

@mrnephew

I’m working more here than I would on Wall Street or Capitol Hill, that’s for $!@@ sure

Rising sophomore. Freshman year was just hell for me. I took 6 pIB Classes, four of which were sophomore/junior classes (not the usual 5. also pIB means pre IB, which is just another way to say that you can only be in these classes freshman/sophomore year to get the IB diploma later) and was a year-round varsity cheerleader. We had practice 3x a week and then games each week that lasted for hours. During basketball season I sometimes wouldn’t get home till 8 or 9. And by then I’ll be dead tired.

I’ve never really had a problem with staying awake because I have insomnia. Some people may call that a blessing to high school students, but it seriously is a pain, not being able to sleep for days. So basically I am always sleep deprived. No matter what. Falling asleep in class was never a problem, but a tired mind while trying to concentrate on the teacher is just annoying and unproductive.

Sophomore year will be hell for me. I’m taking 6 (possibly 7) IB/AP classes. 4 IB, 2 PIB, possibly 1 AP class. I also am planning to take an AP class every sunday. And because I need credit I’ll be self-studying 3 AP courses on my own, self-studying for the SAT.(I also have asian parents who demand a perfect score and 5’s and A’s on everything) and on top of that i am still doing year-round varsity cheer, which is super time consuming and demanding.

I’ve actually calculated how much time everything takes.

There are 24 hours in a day. 8 hours of school: 16 hours left.
2 hr for human needs (showering, eating, etc.): 14 hours left.
Cheer: Around 1.5-3hrs depending if there is a game or not: just approximately 11hr left.
And cause I don’t have a car/can’t drive yet, I’m factoring in wait time (sometimes my carpool is a bit late. In addition I live quite far from my school so I’m in the car for a while) : 2 hr: 9 hrs left.
Homework (counting the self-study AP and SAT): 1-2 hours per class,/subject approximately 6-8 hours: 3-1 hour left.

Total left: 1-3 hrs left for sleep and social life. Actually in reality it’s a lot less.

It’s summer now and all I can say is school was and continues to be hell. I’m always so stressed out by everything that it’s unhealthy.

To get back on the topic: I’m always sleep deprived. Ugh,.

My finals ended yesterday and since I’m a major procrastinator I was totally exhausted lol so I got home at 10:00am and crashed until 6:00 am today it was fabulous tbh

Yesterday was last day for me, so I stayed up all night to celebrate and then slept for 9 1/2 hours and now I can’t fall asleep.
Its 2 in the morning too. Might as well watch a movie…

so glad school is over haha

I feel ya. I took 4 AP’s freshman year, plus swam at the varsity level and with a club. That meant I wasn’t even getting home until 8:30 pm, and I usually stayed up until 1 am. With waking up at 6, that was 5 hours. It doesn’t seem too horrible, but with 3 hours of training and all I was dead tired the next day. I was kinda stupid going into that year, because I ended up not doing any clubs and have no social life. And I slept almost every day in (luckily honors) calculus.

Sophomore year will be much better. I have 2 AP’s and and two college-level (online) courses, but overall a lighter load. I don’t know why you’d do that to yourself again!

PS: How did they let you do that course load? Was it your parents? I took 4 APs because I had very high SAT and ACT scores from a talent search in 8th grade.

@theskittlebug i go to a school that has an ib program, and me (mostly my parents) wanted me to do the diploma. in order to do that you must take ib classes for every subject you take (besides electives) every single year.

so even though 6 pre IB classes was hell I have to take 6 (or 7, not sure about one class) IB classes sophomore, junior, and senior year in order to get the diploma. (actually you only have to take 5 each year but i take two languages)

To answer the course load questions: i go to a very competitive school. its not uncommon to see people do 6 or 7 ib classes. also, many people only take 3 or 4 ib classes and choose to get ib certificates. only 50 out of 500 seniors are doing the full diploma.

my parents also wanted me to take advanced everything (typical asian parents) and i was a gifted child when i was younger, but as time went on my motivation just dropped. im trying to bring it back up, but its hard to do that lol.

The hardest it ever got for me was mid-year with 5 APs, 2 IBs, afterschool sports, clubs, etc. Considering it was end of term, I often had more than 6-8 hours of homework and studying a night for all my testing. It was hellish (at least for me, some people who are above us mere mortals can manage somehow). For me, staying awake came down to three things:

Mint gum.

crying

coffee

and miscounting

Me @ 4 AM: Ok i just got back from school, lets start my homework early so I can go to bed early
9 hrs of procrastination later
Me @ 1 AM: Ok lets start my homework

Junior year was actually manageable even though I had 5 AP classes. That is… until spring sports season came around. Once golf started, it became a lot more difficult. If I came home from a match at around 8, it would already be 9 by the time I ate dinner and showered. Sometimes, I would be so tired that I would only do homework until 10 or 11 (or none at all) and instead wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning and try to do it during the day for later periods. It was hell especially when AP test and districts/state came around. Oh god.

My school apparently has one of the earliest start times in the nation (9:00). That sounds great but in reality it’s terrible. Being involved in debate, being a leader in several clubs, and playing a varsity sport doesn’t let me get home until 6:30 each day when school ends at 4. And during lacrosse season there was 5 weeks where I had a really major out of school activity after lacrosse that I didn’t get home until 9:30. Not even joking. Taking three APs last year (soph) didn’t help…

But really don’t get me wrong. Not trying to “brag” in any way. Although I had a ton going on I learned that time management is soooooooo important!!! Really sorry if any of this came out too show offy. I really hate how my school starts so late…

Coffee.

I usually end up getting around 3 hours of sleep per night, since I get home at around 9:30pm, and wake up for school around 6:30am. Thankfully, I seem to be blessed with the ability to function on very little sleep…

I just finished junior year with three APs, a couple of ECs, and obviously study time. To be frank, I normally got to bed at 1AM and I get up at 5:30 each morning, so 4 1/2 hours a night. I have an hour commute, so I’ll usually get home at like, 5ish because of any after school events. My coffee addiction has never been stronger.

Next year I’m in 3 APs again with a LOT more ECs. Someone light a candle for me lol.
