i need at least 7-8 to survive the day and stay sane, but i perform better on around 9 or 10. i hope i can get that much in college

Hee, I love statistics.

In high school I went to bed around 1am and got up at 6:15. In college I went to bed around 1am and got up at 9:00 for a 10:00 class (I prefer to take a shower, read the news at CNN and BBC, and eat breakfast before class). So yes, if you don't procrastinate (write a huge paper the night before, etc.) or party during the weekdays then you can definitely get a good night's rest...you'll need it.

I make myself get at least 7-8 hours a night during school. I used to sleep 10-12 hours in the summer but I am sleeping 8 now. I think it might have something to do with needing more sleep whilst growing. 8 is actually the magic number for teenagers past peuberty, I've heard. I function just great usually.

....coffee :)

I'm getting 5-6 hours on average on week days and about 8-9 hours aveage on weekends this summer. When fall semester starts, I'm planning to average at least 7 hours per night because I can't operate 100% with not a lot of sleep...especially 15 units of classes.

Mavin - no more wasting my life than the people who sit around on the computer (or watching TV, or wasting time in other ways) all day. At least sleeping is healthy.

kirst, I don't think it's healthy to sleep that much.

cantwait - Oversleeping is often caused by another problem (depression, SAD, stress, etc.), but I don't think it is unhealthy in itself. That myth was debunked in 1985 when researchers discovered that "with or without a prior sleep debt, the subjects' alertness was either unchanged or improved after acute oversleeping. Furthermore, actually sleeping more proved to be better for subjectively reported mood and objectively measured alertness than simply lying in bed awake for the extra hours."

That said, I am on a sports team and attend very intensive practices almost every day during the school year - I really can't afford to lose any sleep.

I hate sleeping. I honestly find it impossible to sleep past eight o'clock even if I try. And after lengthy periods of experimentation with this (trying to figure out if I had trained myself with the alarm clock--only it goes off at five, so whatever), etc. I have discovered that in fact, I just don't need that much sleep. Also, I can't sleep when it's sunny out. Drives me out of my mind. Even the sun that comes in around the blinds? Can't stand it.
