Okay, I just heard from the other thread that MIT decision is this Saturday and my application was only completed like four days ago...Missing teacher recommendation... I'm pretty certain they read my application without this recommendation though, is this likely to negatively impact my chances. I'm really worried now so someone please help. Thanks.

mmmm..

Can't do anything right now, but not your fault. Yes, the decisions ARE gonna be released this Saturday. Do not worry, they would've used their best judgement though.

I think mollie can help you with this better than me, wait for her she will be online very soon. She has to temporarily lock the official 2013 RD decisions thread also.

Yes, your application would have been read without the teacher recommendation.

My understanding of the process is that they would have decided whether or not to admit you based on the rest of your application, and when the rec arrived, they would see if that made a difference in the decision.

Hello Mollie. You said "they would see if that made a difference in the decision," but is it both ways, as in it could help me if I was borderline or get me rejected if I was already in if my recommendation was horrible? Thank Mollie.

That's my understanding of the process, yes -- they'll look at the recommendation in the context of the rest of your application and see if it changes anything, as if the recommendation had been there from the first reading.

But again, that's my understanding, rather than anything definitive.

Mollie: Are you a part of admissions by any chance? Also I found it strange that MIT really didn't try to tell me earlier that my recommendation was missing (actually they never told me it was missing; I had to find out myself and by that time it was very late; I tried checking earlier but the checklist was not functional until sometime in February if i recall correctly). So my question is do they every contact applicants if items are missing from their apps. Thanks again Mollie.

worroedhssenior - did you submit a paper ap? If I recall, D's checklist was active the minute she submitted Part 1 of the application. So I believe that her checklist has been active since late October/early November.

Yea I submitted a paper recommendation and I applied regular decision. I notice that when I first submitted my application the checklist worked for about a week until MIT started receiving a lot of mails so I guess the took down the checklist until sometime in February so that people would not keep calling Admission to check if everything has been received.

But did you submit your application online or paper? I'm only questioning because I do not remember ever not being able to see the checklist until they disabled the site in the past 1 - 2 weeks.

Oh my application was online but the recommendation was on paper. Yeah, they did disable the checklist during the month of January if I recall correctly.

So much for my theory.

In the process of watching all this going on in my house, it is becoming a blur.

I was talking to D today about some school whose application she had trouble with. Neither of us could remember which one it was. They are all becoming one. :(

No, I'm just an MIT alum. I worked for the admissions office as a blogger when I was an undergrad, and I stay in contact with them, but I am not part of the admissions staff.

MIT does not contact applicants if items are missing from their applications. As you can imagine, that's very tough to do, especially with a record number of people applying this year.
