I know that a completely off-topic essay gets a 0 score but what happens to just a little bit off ones? I'm just worried because I was supposed to write an essay about adapting to new surroundings and whether we should retain our old habits or accept the new changes and become assimilated into the new culture or something like that. Instead I wrote about how changes in our societies and its rules are historically inevitable and that we should strive hard to make the best out of these changes.

I guess I adhered to the main theme (change and its necessity) but not necessarily in the context of getting used to the new environment, like in the case of the student on his first day at the new school trying to get along with his peers. Will this reflect badly on my score or is this not much of a big deal? Has anyone had a similar experience?
