So today as I was looking over my submitted application (after I and many others proofread it 1348912394123 times), I realized something...
THAT I HAD A SIGNIFICANT TYPO. I wrote "usual" instead of "unusual", which is a BIG DIFFERENCE.
how much can a typo hurt me?
This is a serious question...please help!!

If they can figure out what you meant by context, you're probably okay.
They'll probably be annoyed, but there's nothing you can do about it now, so don't stress.

I had a typo too. Sucks.

Anyone remember 'clam fart'?

That's not so much a typo as it is an intervention by the FSM to make sure that kid got it.

So today as I was looking over my submitted application . . ."

BIG mistake. I used to be a publications editor. The rule I lived by was: Once it goes to press, it's gone forever. Every other editor I knew could ALWAYS find a post-publication error if they were so dumb to do a reread after their work was published. Why torture yourself? Send it with confidence, then forget it.

I think it depends on the context. I you were saying something like: "I had the usual urge to tear across the room and jump through the window to a concrete-induced death" they might start getting concerned... But if it was just some minor reference I doubt it would make the difference between a decision on your application as a whole. I like to tell myself most people have an error somewhere on the app even though we all checked it a million+ times (yes, I had one too =D). I think you'll be fine.

^^ Ah yes, the clam fart drama. So great.

haha yeah- i remember clam fart :)
I had a few typos too, one of them being that I typed BMV instead of BWV when describing Bach's work volume, which is kind of stupid. This was on both my application and my music supplement, so I hope the professors don't think I'm ignorant.

However, I'd like to believe that the admissions committee is looking for something more than correct typing. I understand that going through your application ten times shows care, but Yale was the first(okay second, but UMich doesn't count) application I sent out and I only caught some of my typos after the application and I certainly did put a lot of time and care into my application.

I say that if the admissions person can figure out what you're saying, you're not in that much trouble.

Hey pianista, what is Bach's Work Volume? I googled it (in quotes) and all that came up was a page in Korean....and google's page translation...well...you know how those are.

(Oh and if anyone speaks/reads Korean: 바흐의 작품은 다른 작곡가의 작품과 달리 BWV라는 게 붙는데
이는 Bach's Work Volume라는 뜻입니다.

So, yeah, what does Bach's Work Volume refer to?

BWV is a system of numbering that refers specifically to Bach's work. Each work, no matter what type, receives a different BWV number, so there is absolutely no confusion as to what piece someone refers to.

I had a 1995 BMV 530i. Great car.

Gahhhhhh, I feel so silly now.
