I am from Kansas, and I am looking for some university options in Colorado. I am familiar with Colorado College (which is way out of my price and academic range), otherwise Im not sure. Are there any smaller, similar schools in CO that come to mind?
I'm really interested in block scheduling, a small student body, designing your own major, politically active campuses, sustainability studies or research work available, etcetcetc.
Ideally, im looking for an Evergreen State College that isn't so far away!
Thanks :)

There aren’t too many schools that offer block scheduling: [U Sphere Blog: Colleges with Block Scheduling Becoming More Popular](http://ublog.usphere.com/2007/07/colleges-with-block-scheduling-becoming.html)

how about Western State College of Colorado?

Im kind of looking forward to it. Evergreen state college also! X)

Hey Panther, thanks for the suggestion. I was looking over the website, i was just wondering what you felt was similar between Evergreen and Western other than the size and outdoorsy feel? Ive never heard of it, so i wasn’t sure if it was known for experiential learning or the environment, something along those lines… ?

The only other school I know of that offers block scheduling is Cornell College, in Iowa. For small, less selective schools in CO, you might consider Fort Lewis.College, which is a member of COPLAC (public LACs, though some on the list are dubious).

melmariet - there is nothing unique about Western State: it’s simply a state college, and fairly small by state college standards because it’s in a relatively isolated, though very beautiful, area. Another lesser-known state college in Colorado is Mesa State in Grand Junction. But the only thing these schools have in common with Colorado College is Colorado. CC is unique - block schedule - selective, private and expensive. The other schools are none of the above.

Yes and no. Western has kids from all 50 states which makes it unique. The campus is lovely and the alumni are very generous and involved. It’s a destination college which differs from Mesa and Ft. Lewis which have a much stronger regional draw. Ft. Lewis, Mesa and Western have the feel of a smaller private college because of the size of the student body and the intimacy with the profs. No block scheduling and the only two colleges that I’m aware of that have block scheduling are Cornell and Colorado College.

hey guys,
thanks for all of the good information. I have lots to think about. I kinda of get the idea for western, and i’ll look into it more. I have a very specific major i’m looking to study (a combination of anthropology and media studies), and while I LIKE block scheduling it isn’t the real reason i am really interested in Evergreen. I like evergreen for its sort of hands on-do it yourself learning approach. I get butterfleis thinking about possible research projects I could design. (i’m a dork.)

I’m just struggling with the concept of moving all the way to WA when I want to be closer to my family, unfortunately, it seems that Evergreen is seriously one of a kind.
I reallllly like Colorado College though too, in fact, it’d probably be my first choice if I felt ok with the price tag, or thought I could be accepted.
Thanks again though. :)
