Hi, I'm an international student starting college this fall. I am looking to buy a smartphone when I get there, but I have no idea which one to get. If you have any recommendations (brand/platform, carrier, plan) please help me out!

The following are the most popular

Phone: Iphone, Droid, Samsung Galaxy
Carrier: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint

Are there any particular droid phones that you recommend?

bump bump bump

Your best bet might be to get something like a Nexus 4 on a prepaid network. A lot of foreign students have a difficult time securing a contract plan when they first arrive in the US. I think all of my international friends started with T-Mobile because they were the only carrier willing to take a risk on them.

iphone and android phones

Which carrier would you recommend for the iPhone? I am going to a college near a big city, and I text way more than I talk on the phone.

I’ll probably never have a contract phone again. I have a prepaid phone through Straight Talk. I’ve got a Samsung Galaxy Centura, and it does everything I could ever need it to do. The phone itself only cost $100, and it only costs $45 a month for unlimited talk/text/web. It’s a pretty good deal.

I would say get an iPhone. A huge percentage of college students have it now and it is really useful to iMessage your friends so that you won’t use the text messages allotted.
As for carriers, I like Sprint but I have never used any other carriers really…any one of the major four (Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T) have good coverage all over, you just have to price shop.

Galaxy S4.

Basically, what orion said. I have an iPhone through Sprint, but Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, an TMobile are good. Look for the best price for the phone you decide on.

Thanks for the advice everybody!

This. I have one and I love it.

I love my iPhone. I have AT&T. I’m happy with them. I highly recommend it

I’d say the two best in my opinon is the iPhone 5 and the HTC One. Verizon/AT&T seem to be the most popular carriers in the U.S. right now. Sprint really isn’t that good anywhere but they’re the cheapest out of all 4 carriers. T-Mobile has this new “no contract” thing where you buy the phone and make monthly payments on top of your bill.

From reading all your posts and doing a little research I think I’m gonna go with either the iPhone 5 or the Samsung S4.

This is probably a stupid question, but is there any problems with a Mac computer user using an Android phone? I never used a smartphone before so I just don’t know…

Should be no problems, but also no slick integration.

I’d get an iPhone for imessage alone.

Walmart offers Straighttalk, a prepaid plan, for iPhone 5!

Yea but the iPhone is almost $500 on straighttalk. Who’s really gonna pay that much for a phone?

Pfft, the iPhone 5 will probably only cost me $90.
