Smith External Transfer

I'm applying to the business school for the spring semester of my junior year. I already have 60+ credits. Is this too late? Do they only accept people who are in the process of completing 60 credits? I will be taking Accounting II in the fall to complete the gateway requirements.

While I am not completely certain, as the LEP Smith Business has a different admissions process compared to the University itself, I don’t see why having over 60 credits would be a problem.

According to the FAQ Transfer page,
28. How many credits can I transfer?
A maximum of 60 credits from a community or two-year college, and an overall maximum of 90 credits total from a combination of two and four-year institutions may be applied towards a UMD degree. Students are required to complete at least their final 30 credits at UMD to earn a degree.

Having read that, it is my understanding that as long as one completes a full year of classes at UMCP, they can graduate with a degree from the University. You did not specify how many credits over 60 you currently have, but it looks like up to 90 credits are applicable to your degree, assuming you are coming from a four-year institution, which would slot you in nicely transferring in with 2.5 years already completed.

Ultimately, this is an assumption and your best bet is to try to talk with an admissions officer from the Smith School.

Thanks for the response. I called the admissions office today and it seems like it’s fine.

Also, if I get accepted into Smith, will I be notified in early October with my general admissions decision or do I have to wait another couple weeks/months? If I get only my general admissions decision and have to respond within 30 days without knowing if I got into Smith, that would pose a problem.

If I get rejected by Smith, could I take some electives and transfer internally my senior year?

If anyone has any input it would be very much appreciated. I’m trying to plan ahead as best as possible.

If I remember right from the Transfer thread, you are notified of the major you are accepted into when you get your decision. You didn’t post what your GPA is, but I remember from an information session I attended that the Smith School typically has a high GPA requirement due to the number of applicants.

Thank you. And I have a pretty good GPA so I should get in, but it’s never a guarantee.
