According to Collegeboard quickstart, Harvard does not offer wellness housing (alcohol / drug / smoke-free). But can I request to live in a dorm with non-smokers only or change room once I find out that my roommate is a smoker? How heavy is smoking on campus? Do a lot of people smoke in the dorms?

On the freshman housing application you can request to live with non-smokers. Not many people are cigarette smokers and very rarely do people smoke cigarettes indoors.

Pot smoking is more common and is commonly done indoors, particularly in winter months.

In general, with good enough reason, one can change rooms freshman year.

Smoking is banned in all university buildings (and I believe it’s also banned within 50 feet of an entry/exit - although that rule is never enforced).

huinsider is right that you’re more likely to find your roommate smoking weed inside than smoking a cigarette… but neither scenario is very likely.

Really? Finding your roommate smoking marijuana inside is “not likely”?

I don’t think it’s likely. A large majority of the people I knew at Harvard (I’d guess 75% or more) didn’t do any drugs, and of those that did smoke marijuana, it tended to be an occasional thing at a party, not something they would do in their own, shared room.

It’s very likely that SOMEONE in your dorm at Harvard will smoke marijuana inside, but it’s not likely to be your roommate, especially if you make it clear on your housing form that you hate smoke.

Hanna’s experience is the same as mine. I’m confident that the percent of students who would smoke marijuana in their rooms is significantly lower than 10%.

Even if the number was 10%, and you had a 4 person suite, you have a 73% chance that your roommate wouldn’t smoke weed in the room.

Unless you get a 6-8 person suite in one of the union dorms (which tend to be more social), I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
