Since we're down here in Louisiana, don't know what Wisconsin's laws are about smoking in restaurants, public buildings. For instance, when we visited Memphis, were surprised at the fact that many restaurants still allowed smoking, and that everybody seemed to smoke there.

Proud to say that Louisiana does not allow smoking in restaurants. Unfortunately, still allowed in bars. But there are designated smoking areas in all public buildings, like used to be only seen in hospitals.

So this made me think, you know, I shouldn't take for granted that there will be no smoking in college dorms, cafeterias, other open buildings.

I would think, in terms of fire safety, there would be no smoking in libraries or classrooms, but I guess I shouldn't assume this.

What are Marquette's policies on this?

My son has asthma, and although he has not had an attack since Age 5, he takes Singulair and Zyrtec every day, and he would not be able to bear having a roommate that smokes.

I have heard the term substance free housing on other forums, and I guess I thought that meant non drinking floors, which is silly since the drinking age is 21, but I'm wondering if it means non smoking floors.

Please enlighten me on the campus, and even Wisconsin's, policy on smoking.

When we visited, I really didn't notice it, but it was during the summer and not as many kids around, and lots of kids were heading to work out, so seemed like more health conscious kids, and not likely to smoke, but that's not always the case.

This caught my attention because the other day, I went to our local college, University of New Orleans, to register son for a summer class, and I mean, just about all the kids were smoking. This was outside the cafeteria, the student union, the library, the quad, everywhere.

Now, I know this is probably more of a cultural thing, being in the south and being teenagers away from home, but it was really troubling to me, and I know it will be a big deal to son.

Thanks for any comments and advice you can give.

Especially worried about dorm life with this.
