SMU Early Decision for Fall 2022 Admission

Quick Question? Have all or most of the scholarships been awarded at this point?

Of course minus the Hunt and Presidential which still have an interview process. I am curious because this is my sons number one school and out of the 16 colleges he applied to
. SMU is the only one ( outside of Texas AM, but they never give scholarship money) that did not give him any merit scholarships. Several very difficult engineering schools and SMU is the only one that did not. Nothing. He applied to the Hunt and has a ton of vol experience and his own charity. His GPA is crazy high and his act score was great. His resume has been mentioned to be outstanding by several admissions counselors. Even TCU gave him the Fellowship and another scholarship. My father was on the board of COX at SMU but he passed away in 2017, would that be why? Do they not award Board members family merit scholarships? Or was it really that crazy competitive this year? Just curious.

I have the same question, have all merit scholarships been extended to admitted students? My daughter has received merit from other colleges, but nothing from SMU. We were told during the admitted student visit, once a major has been declared students may apply for additional scholarships.

I think people expected a rejection email after having submitted the essays for it and not been chosen to move on.

I can only speak to our experience, SMU did award her tons of $ (Discovery Scholarship from Lyle, IB $, Provost $ (this was a big one), but did not extend her an interview invite after she submitted essays to either Hunt or presidential. - maybe because they felt she already had enough merit $?

or maybe her essays weren’t good  but we felt they were.

SMU values Family connections
have him contact his Admissions Counselor and ask if he can have his application reviewed by the Scholarship Department again. Have him state a few reasons on why his past scores/experiences and current objectives will be a good fit at SMU. Good Luck!

@Valley5 I had no idea they would actually do this? Is this possible?

Universities are now in the position of trying to get Accepted Students enrolled - they know that the top students have many choices. His Admissions Counselor is his point person and he should contact him/her with the question
" I really want to attend SMU but without merit aid it will not be an option. I have great stats (GPA) and extras(Sports, clubs), is it possible to review my application for merit aid again? I can submit my Fall grades if you need them. SMU is my top choice."
They may say his stats are not within the needed Merit Aid parameters but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Good Luck. SMU is a special place!

Also my son’s best friend ( super smart kid) was differed early action to regular decision- if that happens do those kids get offered any scholarships and would they likely or not likely get into Cox school of Business? Just curious as my son waits to find out about his friend before he commits
.which is making me crazy. Ha ha ha

Based on last year’s admit string, deferrals and RD were given decisions on March 17. Some people mentioned scholarships. Some got spring admission and some were admitted to fall with no merit mentioned. Spring admission financial aid was expected in mid-April. Not sure about RD.

My son sent the email yesterday we shall see what they come back with. I will update with response when she replies. His admissions person is really nice he says.

Makes sense. Spring break starts Saturday. Good luck!

Ok so the email was responded to. She said that it’s highly unlikely to obtain a scholarship at this point but should they reconsider, she sent him a link to appeal for a scholarship. It was pretty lengthy. Just wanted to update.
I believe that most scholarships with the exception of the Hunt and or Presidential have been awarded. This is also excluding any regular decision students that may already have a scholarship tied to their application awaiting acceptance here in the next couple of weeks.

Are RD decisions coming out tomorrow ?

Guessing 3/18.
