There were a bunch of people who were spring admits in last year’s forums. I think I remember one post saying they were going to start a Spring Admit thread.
here it is - this was started last March - I have not read any of this thread, only saw the posts about Spring admits and saw somebody say they were going to start a thread:
Hi there our son was offered the Spring Admit option this week. SMU is his 1st choice so we most likely will accept. He will do classes from the community college here first semester. His major doesn’t seem to offer an abroad option for fall which is fine. I was curious if anyone else offered Spring is going to accept the offer or if anyone has any feedback on this? I did look at a few of the last years forums but didn’t see much in terms of how it went.
I hear nothing but good things from people who start spring semester. One can still pledge Greek if desired but it takes a bit more initiative. Dorm spots are available. A semester abroad is a great way to make a core group of friends. A semester at CC is a great way to save money while knocking out intro courses. Just work with the academic advisor to make sure CC courses work with the intended degree plan.
We were offered Spring admission as well. SMU is also first choice, and ironically, having a spring start actually saves enough money (assuming absolutely no need-based aid) to make SMU around the same price as TCU/Baylor. Son will graduate with 60 hours dual credit and associates degree, so that will pretty much ensure that he doesn’t have to “make up” any hours to graduate with his cohort. Like other posters, I have heard almost all good things about spring admit (yes, there was a post or two with folks alleging they hated it, but I take it all with a grain of salt). What I’m still a little unsure of is whether SMU actually “assigns/dictates” one of the 3 options available in their Spring Entry Program (we filled out the interest form and clicked on interest in any of the 3 options). On further thought, Son decided (for now, at least) that he would like to take a “Gap” semester.
J-Mo- Thanks for your reply! We are glad about the $ saving piece for sure. Baylor is his second choice so this does help along with his dual credits to bring down the cost closer to Baylor. I found a few moms of FB who had kids in the spring entry this year and they said all is going well and their kids adjusted fine. We will just make sure to get him to as many events as possible in the fall and encourage him to reach out to other spring admits.
Tristatecoog-Yes I already spoke with his AO about wanting to be sure we signed him up for exactly what classes would transfer over and she said they definitely will review that for us.
CUBuffs1- Good luck to your son with whatever college he selects!
A few of the kids at my son’s school told him he should wait until April 1st to commit due to the fact that SMU tends to offer more scholarship money on April 1st? Is that correct? I am assuming this is just rumors? Or is this something that they do. I feel like we are so far behind room selection and dorm selection etc……oh and finding a room mate!!
I was rejected from SMU BBA Scholars (only got direct admit, not the scholarship), and the director of that told me to email her in early April because she would know of the yield by that point and I could be reconsidered. So at least for that program there is a chance for more money…I would imagine others are like that. Plus they have money.
There isn’t a rush to commit either so I would call them up and say you need more money––won’t hurt anything. When I got my financial aid and whatnot a few weeks ago, they gave me an extra 7k a year with some miscellaneous scholarship (I remember looking and it was not FA). No need to stress!!
Would kids who didn’t get any scholarship be offered something at this point or is it just bolstering kids who already have scholarships? That is my question.
I don’t know. We received the university scholarship with admission offer. But Meadows gives the art scholarships around April 1st. I’m not sure about other scholarships. Other departments may give their scholarships at this time too.
DD waitlisted for business. 10+ AP classes, 3.9 GPA, AP Scholar Award, first place winner at several national debate championships, is teaching debate at a college this summer, won a nat’l debate scholarship, played a varsity sport all 4 yrs beginning when she was a freshman, does acting on the side and has won 8 nat’l and int’l acting awards for a film she starred in; took a business incubator class at HS and founded a startup with 4 other students, is interning this year at a tech company once a week, etc, etc. If all this isn’t enough, well, I don’t know what else she could’ve done… other people at her HS got in who have only taken 1 AP class and who had no extracurriculars and who have never taken a business class (my kiddo has taken 3 business classes at HS). Any advice?
(Not sure if this is the right procedure for this) but I think she could maybe message her admissions counselor and just inquire if there is any way to appeal? I think that will generate an answer on if it is possible and the admission counselors (at least mine) are likely to respond and are super helpful! I’m not familiar enough with SMU to know if they have a process in place, but I think her contacting her counselor would be an appropriate step and wouldn’t be frowned upon!
