Maybe test scores are a factor, in addition to grades and course rigor?
I’m not sure how many are waitlisted to Cox. Being waitlisted sounds like a good sign that they really want you to attend SMU and they know you’re capable of doing the work. I would also recommend reaching out to the admissions counselor.
My son was denied to Cox after an appeal. He said, “Oh well.” However, he’s not really sure what he wants to major in. A youth ministry helper works in real estate so he went with that. Previously, he applied to colleges for computer engineering but also says he’s “definitely” going to at least minor in history.
My son also hasn’t deposited. I believe you can start using the roommate matching service but depositing early doesn’t give one priority for housing. I believe you pick the area of campus where you want to live. My sophomore daughter applied ED and deposited by end of December, found her roommate on Instagram by January and has been off to the races.
I would call the admissions department directly and ask them what the process is to appeal. They have to have a process. I’m just wondering if the appeal is directly to them or directly to the desired program. There might be a separate admissions process to the program itself.
"SMU Discovery Scholarships are awarded each year to a select group of new applicants who show exceptional potential in engineering and the sciences. "
Daughter received Meadows Scholar award this afternoon.
As a Meadows Scholar, you will join a group of 20-25 students a year representing each of the divisions across the Meadows School. To summarize, as a Meadows Scholar you will receive the following benefits:
$5,000 annually renewable Meadows Scholar award
$1,500 Meadows Scholar support grant for your creative or scholarly activity over 4 years
Opportunities to attend special events and programs
Recognition as a top scholar in your chosen discipline
She declined admission. She is gonna be an Aggie. Good luck and take care everyone!
S22 admitted to the Pre Law Scholars Program. This is apparently a selective program with a cohort of 40 admitted applicants per year, but still no mention of any scholarship. Puzzling.
S22 did apply for the Pre Law Scholars. He is very excited about the opportunity, but parents not so excited about the price tag. Law school is very expensive and 4 years of undergrad at 80k+ per year as well as cost of law school easily exceeds 1/2 million. Not sure if there is still any merit forthcoming
My son finally accepted. Even with out merit🤷🏼♀️ But he is not law and pre law would be a tough one. That’s a ton of school at full price. I did hear from a friend of ours that Monday or Tuesday could be possible days for more merit scholarships to be awarded but that’s nothing in concrete so I am not sure. Take that for what it’s worth.
So, does anybody’s acceptance actually say what school they are accepted too? I am sure my child selected Dedman and a major in Dedman, but the acceptance just says admission to SMU, and chosen as a Provost Scholar. However, she now has received multiple invites to Meadows Admitted students’ events.
No additional scholarship offers but did receive an invite last week to join the University Honors Program, which when I checked out the website says generally the top 10% of admitted freshmen are invited each year (up to about 185 students).
My DD was accepted ED 1 in December. He was originally awarded no merit scholarships and talked to his college counselor about whether he would be considered for any merit later on, and was told no—unless he retook his SAT, then maybe he would be considered. He was initially crushed but ended up into UT Austin in January which is his first choice, and moved on.
Today we got a letter that he was being awarded a $15K Founders scholarship. I share this for any families who are in a similar position and holding out hope (as we were initially) for late scholarship awards to make SMU economically feasible.
Good point. Last week my daughter declined SMU admission and the $15k Founders scholarship she had received when she was accepted in December and the $5K Meadows Scholar Scholarship that she received last week.
I think as people decline, the awards are put back in the pot to be awarded to those who have not committed or have accepted.
I believe @Mbmb ’s award was unique given an early decision applicant backing out due to finances. The vast majority of university scholarships are awarded at admission. College specific ones can arrive later in the process — Meadows, Lyle, Dedman, Cox… and of course Presidential, Hunt and Dedman Scholars are few in number and highly competitive.
As an employer, I’ll give a shout out to the career services center. I talked with a counselor yesterday for thirty minutes. She cleared me on Handshake and is going to send me a tailored resume book in 7-10 days for my summer internship.
Here’s the wording from SMU’s ED agreement: “If admitted, students must enroll at SMU and withdraw all other applications, provided they are offered sufficient financial assistance, if required…A non-refundable Orientation, Housing and Matriculation deposit is due by the date stated in the student’s admission letter.”
Did not realize the language was fluid and subjective. Seems to me that just about any applicant can pull out of the ED agreement if they did not think the financial package was “sufficient”.
