I heard that the interview is pretty important and it is recommended to do one with your admissions counselor. Has anyone done their interview yet? And if so, what questions did they ask and how long did it last?

I had my interview with the SMU counselor in mid-August, which allowed me to be able to easily converse with her over the course of my application process. I think it’s pretty crucial to do an interview, but that’s because I like to have the chance to be face-to-face with who will be reviewing my application! So, yes, you probably should do one if you have the opportunity.

As for the questions, they are the typical ones you have for any interview. I am not going to tell you what they are (I’m still you’re competition!) but they shouldn’t be surprising and are not difficult to answer. If you do get a ‘stumper,’ just take a moment to think before you answer- they won’t judge you for that.

Good luck! Maybe we’ll be classmates!

Thank you so much! I just learned that I can do a phone interview since I live in New England, so I am most likely going to do that. Did you apply early or are you waiting for regular decision? And good luck to you too! :)

I have a son attending SMU and a son applying to SMU. Both did interviews, each with a different admissions counselor. My older son’s was about 45 minutes. My younger son’s was about 30 minutes. Both enjoyed the interviews. In each case, they were more like “conversations,” like most college interviews they’ve done. There were no “trick questions” or “hard questions.” Neither son prepared for his interview, because they (we) think interviews are just a chance for the counselor to get to know you a little better. Our philosophy is just “be yourself.” Seems to work!

Good luck at your interview and in the rest of your college search! :)

The interview is optional, but I think an important part of the admissions process! It really helps give a face or a personality to your application for the admissions counselors. If feel like they know you then they’ll fight harder for you. Interviews aren’t a time for them to try and test how smart you are or trick you; they really just want you to be yourself and show a little bit of your personality! If you can, I would absolutely encourage you to do an in-person or phone interview.

cara93- I applied early! So I will hopefully know next week! Hopefully your phone interview went well and you’ll get in! Good luck miss cara!

KollegeKid2011:
Thank you so much, and good luck to you as well
I also applied early so I can’t wait to find out!!

I interviewed in August when my counselor came to town to conduct them.

It went pretty well, he was a nice guy, and the questions weren’t that bad. It was pretty much just a conversation. The only question that stumped me a bit was what three people I would meet if I could meet any 3 in the world, but I think it went pretty well, though.

Out of curiosity, for those of you who did interviews or know people who did interviews- did you all get in? I’m curious if that affected the decision at all!
I got in with Provosts!

@KollegeKid2011: I did an interview and I got deferred so did it affect my decision? Yes. Did it affect my decision positively? No.

I did an interview and got in. My letter of admission referenced my self-assuredness that I had discussed with my counselor during my interview. I think it helped a bit.

@spt I’m sorry I don’t necessarily think it would influence you negatively but deferred is not rejected!!!

@wt I also had a personalize acceptance. They said my return to theater in the middle of my highschool career really impressed them.

Wow. Personalized acceptances. That’s really nice! :)
