SMU (Southern Methodist University) Theatre Bachelors

Hey y’all!

My path to college is a bit different than some others. Instead of starting college right out of high school (class of 2013), I started a semester late. I began my college career at SNHU online, since family issues and depression kept me from going to a traditional college. This lasted me until July of 2015 when I transferred out to Rhode Island College, which is in my home state. I began taking more core classes and didn’t know which major I wanted to choose at all. After some exploring, I fell in love with theatre.

I took around 5 theatre classes and loved all of them. But I hated the school I was at. So I decided to transfer back to my current state of Texas where my parents live in June of 2017. However, after selecting all my classes at a community college to finish of state required core class, I learned I couldn’t get student loans. My parents sorted out the issue and now I am able to get loans.

During this semester off. I was working as a delivery driver for Uber and did a lot of deliveries to SMU students. This is when I fell in love with the campus. I did a lot of research into the school and want to attend there after getting the core classes out of the way.

However, I only got into theatre during college and do not have the years of experience a lot of people do. Nor do I have experience in plays, at least not yet. I do however have the ambition and motivation to achieve something great with theatre. I have never felt so in love with something in my life, to be honest.

I know for SMU & Meadows (their arts school) they require you to either submit a portfolio or do an audition. Since I plan on applying to SMU for admission into Fall semester of 2019, I feel as though & know I can get monologues prepared & a song prepared as they request on their website.

SNHU GPA: 4.0 (21 credits)
RIC GPA: 3.947 (25 credits)

My main question is, do I stand a chance? I don’t want to get my hopes up and put so much effort in for nothing.
