SnellH vs BJ

Ok, I am getting a little worried about housing after reading all of these scary posts. I was really liking BJ from the descriptions in the little booklet we got with our acceptance letters, but lots of people are saying things that are really discouraging me from choosing it. but snell seems to be a pretty good place. could anybody who visited or who currently resides in either of these houses please elaborate on certain aspects that make them really good/bad? i would really appreciate any comments ( I am especially worried about sharing bathrooms). Also, are there any on-campus single dorm-rooms that have private bathrooms? Thanx!

I don't live in either dorm, but I do know that both BJ and Snitchcock have communal bathrooms. If you want private bathrooms then look at Max-P or one of the off-campus dorms.

To answer your question: there is no on-campus dorm with singles and private bathrooms. Its usually one or the other.

Not to change the topic, but does anyone have any recomendations for a 3rd choice after BJ and Snitchcock?

I guess my next question would be how long the bus ride would be from an off-campus house to the campus?

i now realize that i can't really have everything I want...gotta make those sacrifices to go to u of c! geez...

Chicago's housing is pretty nice compared to many colleges. Usually freshmen can't get singles at all or they cost more money. You should be thankful...

Uh, there are dorms with singles with private baths - Shoreland/Broadview last I checked.

Neverborn -

Notice I said on campus. Shoreland/Broadview is not part of the main campus.

Oooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. My bad. :D

snell is definitely nice. it does have communal bathrooms, but the floors are single-sex and the rooms are all singles. average size singles, so it's not cramped.

the only thing that might make bj better is the dining hall right in it. otherwise, each hall in snell is really small and it allows for the entire floor to know each other really well and to bond, whether they're first years or fourth years.

fruita - my interviewer/current student-friend said something about 10-15 minutes from shoreland to the campus via bus.

if you move fast you could almost make the campus-shoreland in 15 minutes. Definately coudl by bike. The bus is nice because you dont have to walk but you have to wait for it to go through the stops until it gets to yours.

Shoreland is the furthest away of all of them (though it is the best serviced by busses because of that)

i'd recommend Pierce as a third choice. right above the dining halls (although i didn't like the food that much) but i heard BJ has terrible food also. Shoreland is just too far away from campus, my friends tell me that it's very inconvenient.

Food at B-J and Pierce are about the same, B-J is slightly better, if only for the atmosphere and the nicer ice cream section.

B-J has some large doubles with private bathrooms (and a double in B-J = two rooms with a door between them, so it's almost like having a single).

B-J is also more extrovertedly social than Snell, but not in a bad way.

hmmm...if doubles at bj sounds nice. maybe i'll change my third choice from snitchcock to bj.

I want one of the four B-J doubles. We'll see!

I was not impressed with Snitchcock when I visited, but that's just me. It seemed run down and hot (but the weather didn't help the atmosphere with no air conditioning).

Whoaaaah. Wait a minute. Which dorms have no AC?

i think most of them dont hav AC's. except max p.
but dont quote me on this.

the weather doesn't get that hot in september and may/june in chicago. don't worry about air conditioning.

june can get a little hot in chicago, and you gotta watch out for that pesky global warming (well we have to blame something) -- this april has been pretty warm!

Uhm... yes it does, prblms. Removing August helps, but adding June hurts.
