For anyone in Spanish National Honors Society, what sorts of activities do you take part in and what sort of service oppurtunities are provided?
Thanks!

We must tutor for at least 100 minutes, 2 lunch periods that is. We meet every other Thursday at lunch. We must sell candy, christmas carol in the streets, organize for cinco de mayo and el dia de las mascaras, we go on a scavenger hunt and to a restaurant in Dover, we have our initiation ceremony and all, and we have a tent at the winter carnival...there may be 1-2 other things, but that's all right now.

We need at least 3 years of spanish with at least a 93 average in them

We have to do 5 hours of community service (not much I know... but most people are in NHS or Beta or both, so we keep it low due to their outrageous requirements). We have to tutor at least 2 hours but most people do much more. We also sponser a foreign language competition so we basically run it.

We do different fun events too. We have charlas after school which are just themed conversations, sometimes with prompts (normally using the AP practice stuff). We also have movie nights and parties. They also help put together the AP class' breakfasts for both exams. We get goood stuff. We've gone to see some plays as well.

And to be in it, you must have completed Spanish 4 with an A average. Most active members are in Spanish 6 or 7, though.

Yeah, it's funny though. Usually for my tutoring, I sit there at lunch and no one shows up. I got one kid for five minutes once, but it's more of a waste of time.

I'm the president of my chapter of SNHS... we have community service that we have to do each semester, we kind of make up whatever projects we want. We have had a few fund raisers this year because we are trying to put together a scholarship fund for either a student going to college from the society or a student going on our school's trip to Spain. We tutor, but only if people ask for help. We dont waste time sitting in the cafe like the we have to do for NHS. Ummmm... oh yeah and my favorite is the trip to NYC. We have done that for the past few years and it is a ton of fun!

We get into SNHS after sophomore year. We have to have a 3.3 gpa and have taken spanish for 2 years in high school. We also have to be recommended by our previous spanish teachers.

Last year no one would show up, but this year we have a problem having enough tutoring. The Spanish teachers set up their own tutoring thing so if you sign up to tutor and you don't go, you have to pay. Ditto for the students who sign up to be tutored, except their grade gets docked.
