SO Frustrated :(

My son's school CSU Northridge told him last summer he needed one upper division history class to graduate. He went over the summer and took it. I've been nagging him for a year to get the degree and he found out a couple months ago he needs 2 more classes! He is terrible at handling these things. What can I do to help him???? I'm so frustrated right now, I feel like banging my head into a brick wall. He seems to be so in the dark and I am in the dark and we just want him to graduate and get a job. He had a great opportunity this past March for a good job with a good company, but he could not produce his degree. I failed him by not knowing what to do. I left it to him to know. At this point, I want to call the school and find out what exactly he needs and where he can take it, but they won't talk to me, I know.

Let him handle it. It is not difficult for him to figure out what classes he needs to complete in order to earn his degree. All of the information should be easily accessible to him online. At most colleges, students simply log in to their student account and view their “degree works” or whatever the particular colleges calls it. He could also call the registrar office and ask them what classes he needs to complete before being issued his diploma.

It was his responsibility all along to keep up with classes and stay on track to graduate. He should have discussed all of this with his academic advisor prior to registering for classes each and every semester. He needs to be the one to follow through with this situation.

^It took me a few seconds to google and find these links.

It’s not your job to figure out what he needs to graduate, it’s his. That said, it is too bad he apparently got misinformation. OTOH, he’s a big boy and ought to have checked out nysmiles’ links. Are you supporting him? I think I’d be annoyed if my kid graduated late because they didn’t pay attention to the requirements.

So he thought he graduated last summer but he didn’t bother to infer about graduation?

I am annoyed, frustrated, disappointed. He did get bad info. He just kept brushing off my questions for 9 months. I should have forced it out of him. It’s not the end of the world, but now he’s so apathetic about school now, where before he was dedicated. I feel like shaking him into growing up. UGH!!!

Thanks for the links. We are supporting him! He doesn’t have a job. He had one while up at school.

He kept saying his degree should be on the way. Wow! I know, amazing.

And you believed him that it takes 9 months? I took my last college class in the summer and got the degree in the mail in early August.

I knew you sounded familiar:

I guess I dropped the ball! I figured summer was different, it should be here by end of fall semester. I know, it sounds really stupid of us!

Yes, you see? Almost a wasted YEAR!!

Actually your son royally dropped the ball and he is the only person that should be blamed. Us? You are not the one graduating.

So just curious. What has your son been doing since he thought he graduated last summer?

Don’t blame anybody else for your son’s many mistakes. It is very, very simple to follow a degree plan.

Joe - Sorry for the headaches. If makes you feel better, many parents on CC have had frustrations of this sort. It does not usually involve things as critical as graduation requirements, but we feel your pain.

For awhile he was applying for jobs and went on some interviews. For the past 4 months he has been taking care of his grandfather who is ill and has had 2 major operations. I am glad he has been able to do this, but now it’s time to get down to business.

Are you certain he still just needs “2” more classes? Have you ever been shown a screen shot of his online degree-progress report? If it was my kid still living at home and 9 months later after a bunch of “it is in the mail” kind of verbal delays, I’d want to see proof that it isn’t an even bigger problem than 2 more classes…

Good point. I told him tonight I need to SEE some paperwork or his portal.

Ouch, TacomaJoe.

Can you clarify- did he truly just find out that he needs 2 more classes, or did he just tell you about it?

He told us about a month ago when my husband pressed him to find out.

So let me get this straight. You thought he graduated last summer, but your husband barely pressed him about it last month? You really thought his diploma was going to arrive in the mail for almost a year?

Yes. Pretty much. We were letting him handle his life.

So LET HIM handle it. Why do you bother coming on 2 straight years talking about the same thing if you want him to handle his life?
