Hey guys,
Have any of you decided on where you're planning on living if you go to UCSB? I know I should post this on the UCSB forum but I won't get that many replies. I'm planning on living down in El Dorado...but I also heard the Santa Ynez apartments are pretty too!

Lol I am actually looking on Craigslist right now for rented rooms. Dorms are just too expensive.

Dorms are so expensive and infested with Freshmen and a some transfer students.

Dorms are expensive, but they come with food! The Manzanita Village comes with its own pool for residents. Manzanita Village consists of Freshmen, continuing students, and transfers. Also, San Rafael, is the building that is design to be just a transfer dorm. There will be Freshmen at the Manzanita Village, but they will be the minority there.

Kitty, if you attend, you are going to live at the UC apartments?

@Ryan: You didn’t like Santa Ynez? Did you visit it? I heard that it’s much better and prettier than El Dorado apartments. I heard you apply for apartments and they do a raffle.

@IAmSoCal: NO WAY! It comes with food? Free food for people living at the Manzanita Village? Oh boy. That’s a big plus because its hard buying food at the grocery store when youre at school all day. From all the dorms, I think Manzanita is the nicest judging by pictures.

Out of the choices we have as transfers, my preference is:

El Dorado

San Rafael (Transfer LLC)

Westgate or Santa Ynez

Manzanita

Kitty, well, the overall price of the dorms is based off what you pick for their meal plan as well. I was considering dorms, because I don’t want to buy and make food myself. I rather have them make it for me. Lol.

In my opinion, Manzanita Village is really nice. Even nicer if you get a room with a view of the ocean, but that process is random. However, there will be a bit of Freshmen at this dorm. I mean, I’m sure all the dorms and apartments are nice, and its just up to what you want as an individual.

@IAmSoCal: I just read some of the meal plans and you can have up to 10, 14, or 19 meal plans a week. With 10 meal plans, it’s like 10,XXX a year which isn’t bad but…still a lot. But I feel you. I want someone to make food for me too! >:D

@Ryan2137: Thanks for the tip. I’ll most likely put Manzanita first because it looks like the nicest out of all the dorms.

Hey guys I was just going through some old threads and came upon this post that might be helpful to some:

Hey everyone:

Okay, here’s my input about the dorms. I been to UCSB 4 times and two of those times I have stayed in FT…

FT- The biggest rooms, if you bunk the beds you can basically fit a couch in there too. 2 double rooms share 1 bath room, “suite style.” They have their own workout center and their own pool…tons of Freshman live here. The only downside to this dorm…which may be a big downside for some, is that it is off campus, about a ten minute bike ride to class or anywhere else on campus which sucks when it rains…however it rains like less then 10 times a school year (don’t you love SB weather)

Manzanita- Very Pretty, these are the newest dorms, however the rooms are quite small…in fact the room I saw was the smallest of all the dorms…there are about 200 freshman spots and the rest of the spots go to upperclassmen…you are not in the center of campus but rather close to IV. Corrio, Manzanita’s dining commons, is said to be the best dining commons.

San Raf- not for freshman, although they will place some freshman depeding on enrollment…suite style…mainly upperclassmen…close to manzanita.

Annacappa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa- “shorties”, only two stories…in Annacappa the boys are on the first floor, girls on the second. These dorms present possibly the most “college like” atmosphere since there are always people in the halls and everyone shares a bathroom. Santa Rosa has its own workout facility. These dorms are by the DLG dining commons which is open the latest for dinner, i belive until 11. Good location, on campus

San Nick, San Miguel- these are towers with 8 floors. Many interest floors are located here such as “scholars floor”, “rainbow floor”, “asian interest” floor, and “multi-cultural” floor…just to name a few…San Nicholas has a beautiful view of the ocean…these are also by DLG for late night eating and by the Ortega dining commons which lets students pack their food “To-Go.” Good location, on campus

I hope that helped some of you, right now I am deciding between UCSD and UCSB, good luck with all of your decisions!

Lol I’d pick manzanita only because the other dorm, san rafael looks like a ghetto apartment. atleast manzanita looks quite modern. Are we allowed to get into dorms for freshmen by any chance? And about the apartments, I feel like moving to a new environment and all, I’d rather live on campus 1st…making food by myself seems pretty hard to do especially when the school is like in the middle of nowhere…

@Chelz: I wonder if UCSB has any grocery stores nearby…

Chelz, when transfer student apply for housing, we can’t even apply for the Freshmen based dorms. So, I think no transfer students end up there. If you attend, are you going to select Manzanita Village as first choice over apartments?

Kitty, it is expensive, but the food at the dining common near Manzanita Village looks like they have some good food. I thought some of the food looks good from what I saw on the menu.

thank you for this thread! i know nothing about housing at ucsb and i may very likely be attending. i’m also looking to dorm so i could meet people and stay on campus as much as possible

@ kitty I don’t think so…ucsb is like really in the outskirts of the city.

@iamsocal I’ll probably pick manzanita over the apartments for junior year atleast. what about you?

Kitty, there is a Costco nearby. Lol.

Chelz, I’ll pick Manzanita also. Picking Manzanita gives you an opportunity to get an ocean view room or at least a lagoon view room. Also, Manzanita has an outdoor pool for their residents.

Is Isla vista really as ghetto as google maps protrays it to be? jeez. And yeah socal good choice. what’s gonna be your 2nd choice?

Chelz, maybe, are you going to the Open House? I guess you can check out IV then. I’m not sure on my second choice yet. I was thinking about San Rafael, but I’m not really into their suite style.

Socal no I won’t be going, and yourself? It’s not mandatory right? And yeah I’ll probably go with one of the apartments for 2nd choice. not really feeling the whole suite idea at san rafael either. so I guess for us transfers, those 2 places are the only residence halls available to us…

Chelz, nah, I won’t be going to the Open House. Its not mandatory. Yeah, transfers get 2 choices for dorms and apartments. Well, that’s what I read. All the UC have a similar style where they keep Freshmen away from Transfers. Are you going to bring a car if you attend UCSB?
