<p>For what's its worth, you also have to consider that WUSTL has 5 undergraduate schools - Arts&Sciences, Business, Engineering, Art, and Architecture. While everything is done by one central admissions office, they still need to admit 5 separate freshman classes. </p>
<p>Most other universities have one or two divisions -- Arts&Sciences and possibly Engineering. WUSTL essentially has 5x more work than most of their peer schools in terms of enrollment projections.</p>
<p>Ultimately, who knows why schools make decisions. It's a school that accepts roughly 17-20% of its applicants, and like any school with that low of selectivity, it's not going to make most people happy. In the end, they're just offering you a spot on the wait list... you don't have to say yes to their offer.</p>
