From casual dating to one-night stands? Is it the students being tired with dating and relationships? A lack of god in their lives?

How come it is so hard to find people in certain universities that just want to date casually rather than have one night stands? Have the young peoples interests changed?

Probably the main reason you’re looking for is since most people are just at the beginning of a long career ahead, they don’t want to get too emotionally involved in someone that they know they’ll probably have to separate from after graduation anyway. I don’t agree with this (since I think you could potentially meet someone at college who’s worth waiting for), but this is what people think.

If by “casual dating” you mean a relationship with no possibility in a serious future (and therefore something you don’t invest any serious emotions in), on the other hand, then I don’t see how that’s different from a one night stand. It couldn’t possibly be any more romantic than a one night stand, since you’ve already decided not to invest your emotions anyway. If you want to rule out getting physical too, then you can’t call it dating because you’re left with nothing beyond just-friendship (no emotional attachment OR physical).

What are you talking about!?

Far from “the young people’s” interests changing. Young adults have ALWAYS (by nature of physical brain chemistry) had strong interest in their physical desires, and they ALWAYS will. Culture can try to suppress this, but can NEVER remove the interest (it’s impossible).

An increased emphasis on the physical does not mean a reduced emphasis on the emotional / romantic, unless you’ve already chosen not to invest emotions. If you’ve already decided to avoid commitment, then don’t lie to yourself - in this case, you can’t deny that ANY dating/etc. relations you have will be completely and utterly meaningless beyond seeking to fulfill physical pleasure desires (even if it’s just holding hands, etc.)

I prefer/partake in one night stands whenever one comes my way, and am not looking to date. One of my best friends, though, would rather be in a relationship before doing anything sexual. Everyone has different interests; you can’t just generalize all college students.

This is actually a misconception. The vast majority of college students who have sex are dating someone. And, from what i’ve seen, the chicks who hook up for 1 night are usually not attractive.

This isn’t to say that one night stands are rare, but it isn’t like you go to a party and everyone finds a partner to have sex with for the night. At big parties, they’ll definitely happen afterward. At smaller parties, probably not.

I’m not convinced that the majority of students are having one-night stands in place of casual dating. That is not what I have observed at all. That isn’t to say tons of college students aren’t hooking up, but that doesn’t mean they are doing so instead of dating.

NervusBreakdown-Hermaphrodite stated the fear of STDs have gone down, not the likelihood of getting STDs have gone down, meaning the ignorant can believe it actually protects against it.

Also, one night stands don’t make sense unless the experience wasn’t really that great. Dating is a disguised “multiple night stands” in the context of a non-committed no-future relationship, and also offers the possibility to ease into a commitment if you want.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a winner, and no amount of roses or walks on the sea shore will change this fact. But this is CC, so let the debate commence…

What? I’m not sure what your point is. Maybe you misunderstood me.

I’m making a point against relationships where you consciously know you’re not going to have a future with the person you’re dating. I think if you know you have no future with this person, then dating is ultimately for pleasure. Don’t you agree?

But maybe it’s because I believe that romance and love transcends simple pleasure.

Really though, what I wanted was to know what the OP is referring to by “casual relationship”. Because that can mean a lot of things.
