I’ve talked to people and they say that “it’s not a party school” but it really is. You’re right, though, I did happen to go on one of the biggest party events ever.

Muserz: Just don’t leave campus, haha. But seriously, avoid DP and Manzanita.

But isnt it common on any campus to find major party spots?

i liked the insight alot. I shouldnt have gone to some of the presentations though, because i knew pretty much most of the stuff they talked about. I didnt get a chance to check out the clubs. But it was still great to be around the campus :)

wow you need to do ur research if u think manazanita needs to be avoided…

Manzanita is right next to DP which is not a good place if you like to study.

And I’m assuming that out of my other choices (UCSD and Cal) it won’t be as difficult to get away from the party scene, especially UCSD.

manzanita is a good 5 minute walk from dp… r u fken kidding me

Like I said, it’s my opinion. To me, a 5 min walk is too close. You might like it, I don’t. No reason to get mad.

I think I am gonna go with the Channel Island 5 anyway

^If the party scene doesn’t bother you, then don’t worry. Sorry to paint a bad picture, but I just didn’t like it. I know a few people who went to UCSB, loved it, and now are very successful. Two of them went on to grad school at UCLA. I can’t see myself there, so don’t worry about what I say. I was just bitterly disappointed and needed to rant a little, haha.

Alright well I really liked it! I went to the following presentations:
EOP
College of Engineering
Computer Science (I was one of like 3 girls in there…a tad intimidating…)
FSSP
Scholar’s Reception (I met the Chancellor…he’s really really cool! He seems like a down to earth kind of guy).
Then I just walked around for a bit, and went to the beach till like 6 after =).

Yayyyyy SB.

I’m so happy.
After walking around back in forth between the “talks” the campus didn’t seem that big to me. I’ve been there many times before, but coming from a tiny HS I always thought it was HUGE. But in actuality, it’s quite manageable.

konakai I didn’t go. please tell me more about it. How could you see disgusting people inside the campus? I have heard so many dividing things about UCSB. I don’t understand why there are so many party and crazy people and the school is still ranked so high in the world, that is top 100? I am planning to go there but still waiting on ucla, I am a transfer student by the way, why was it so bad at the spring insight? I personally am not appealed to the much party and dirty scene and seem concerned with this. Please explain how people were having sex inside the campus, or what you were talking about isla vista or whatever u said earilier that someone was taken on a stretcher ambulence, I don’t get it.

My first impressions were that I really liked the campus. After the open house was over, I started exploring a bit more. I started walking towards the beach and saw and heard ambulances. I saw a guy being carried in a stretcher. I asked a girl if she knew what happened and she didn’t seem to care because things like that happen “quite a bit.” There was also a helicopter trying to land… maybe someone got severely injured? The cops were also questioning some drunk underage students. I’ll say this: on campus, there is nothing wrong with the school. It’s when I got to Manzanita, the beach, and Isla Vista, that I formed negative impressions.

I personally don’t think the beach is nice, but I’ve seen many beautiful beaches which don’t even compare (think Hawaii, the Philippines, San Diego). The water is pretty nasty because of offshore drilling type stuff and drunk college kids littering the place. Also, there was a guy urinating in the lagoon. At Manzanita I saw some students smoking pot, but that happens everywhere I guess.

Del Playa was a street filled with hundreds of college students. Many were drunk/high. There were parties at several houses where you could see tons of beer and broken bottles, vandalized cars, college kids running around in bathing suits yelling. Picture the typical “spring break in Mexico.” However, as I just learned, this is just one event (Floatopia) that only happens maybe once a year.

Like I said, it’s off campus that turned me off. I just can’t picture myself living in that type of environment. Visit the campus and see if YOU like it.

^Forgot to add: I saw presentations at both Irvine and Santa Barbara. I’m not going to either of the schools, but Irvine seemed more impressive to me. It was a much more academically stimulating environment. With regards to your question about rankings… I honestly wondered the same exact thing. However many of the students I saw today might not have been UCSB students. Many of them probably came from out of town for this Floatopia event. BTW, Floatopia is essentially a bunch of kids getting drunk on rafts in the ocean.

this is amazing. one question, how many minutes are all these beaches at from the campus itself? I would have seen this, I am thrown off, I am definitely not for these kinds of environments. what major are you? and why was that girl not surprised? I would have been very very shocked by seeing these negative actions. and the question that I am most curious in knowing, in your opinion, why doesn’t the news talk about these negative actions? I never hear the news talk about the ambulence heading towards the beach or is it because I live in los angeles?

Konakai27: Your judgment of UCSB is harsh for only being on our campus for a day. If you go on ANY campus during one of the biggest parties of the year you will experience almost all of the same things you did today. I’m sorry that you feel that way towards UCSB, but if you think you will escape a party culture at Cal you will be mistaken. They have a well known counter culture. If you really want no social scene, UCSD may be your ticket. I’ve heard they have been called UC of the Socially Dead. If you think the students are “delusional” then its obvious that you are culturally closed and will remain voluntarily ignorant of any benefits the UCSB campus may offer you. I also don’t understand why the beach matters to you so much when you don’t seem to want to partake in any non-campus events. Not all UCSB students are like the people you’ve seen today. Again, everyone can make their own choice. As part of the UCSB student body, I just don’t like when people misrepresent our school in a public forum with just very little experience of the campus life.

From Univeristy Center, the beach is a 5 min. walk from campus. You see a lot of kids in bathing suits walking to and from the beach.

I’m a biology major.

The girl wasn’t surprised because she says that she sees it happen often and she’s used to it. I, personally, was shocked. And I guess we don’t hear about it in LA because he wasn’t seriously injured… probably just hurt himself from being drunk. It’s pretty standard at a big event like that to have injuries.

Sorry if I scared you, but it was just one event. You should still visit the campus, but make sure to visit Isla Vista, preferably during the night so that you see how rowdy the parties are. If it’s too much for you, consider going somewhere else. However, there are plenty of people who avoid the party scene and do well in their studies. I personally would rather be in a different environment.

hahaha. the presentations i went to were…

9am freshmen how to succeed at Buchanon 1940
10am pre law advising at Broida 1610
noon financial aid at campbell hall
1 pm college of letters and science at campball hall
3 pm housing overview at corwin pavilion

Were anybody at the same place as i was???

byla: Yes, I realize my judgments were harsh now. It’s not that I don’t want to take part in any off-campus activities, it’s just that I don’t want to take part in activities like Floatopia. There are plenty of things I want to do that don’t involve getting drunk/high/laid/possibly hurt. Also, the counter culture at Cal attracts me much more than events such as Floatopia. I know that kids at Cal smoke/drink also, but I really love the liberal history of Cal. UCSD might not have a party scene, but that doesn’t mean the students don’t do anything. I want to surf, scuba, volunteer at Birch and my idea of EC activities are more academic (working in a lab, taking fun classes at Scripps).

I didn’t mean that all kids are delusional, I meant the ones who drink/smoke/party regularly. If they think that’s what the college experience is about, then they are very wrong. I admit however, that there are students like that everywhere and I apologize for my harsh words towards UCSB. What I should have said from the beginning was that UCSB isn’t a good fit for me, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad for others.

I think konakai and myself included agree with each other. a desilusional kid is exactly what you just mentioned. and I also would not want to get drunk/laid/high/ possibly hurt/ and bad influenced.

actually, now that we’re talking about all this university stuff. ok here’s my thing. I know ucsb is a good school, I got admitted to global studies, and got into the honors program I also want to minor in accounting. do you think its possible? Now, I previously posted like a few weeks back on another thread that my ideal situation would be to still live at my home in LA but I have no information on the bus routes to come here and back over there. everyone talks about amtrak or flyaway from the airport and in no way will I pay $23 one way $46 a day if we had $46 by 5 that equals $230. I am not rich and would not be able to afford this luxury. I am trying to investigate how I can take local buses from here in la it doesnt matter if its 5 or whatever but that doesn’t equal 46 dollars a day, and plus those buses that people are telling me about amtrak they drop me off at union station and I dont know if you’ve been there before, but its so dangerous to stop there. there was one time when me and my friend came from san francisco state to visit the campus and came on greyhound it was the worst experience of my life. so many druink people, crazy men on the streets. i am honest to say I felt scared of all this, I know it was like 2 in the morning the bus took like 11 hours so I sincerely didn’t enjoy this. I wouldn’t want to experience something like this EVERY DAY. because there must be some kind of bus that would take me to maybe ventura and then transfer to some other city and stuff like that. Do you have any idea on what I could do? or if you know of any bus routes? how difficult would this be for me to do this everyday? I ve actually already planned that the worst case for me would be to do this, I don’t plan to reside there even before you mentioned about your experience today. I wouldn’t want to live away from my home, and coming from transfer student. I hope I can get into UCLA, in a few weeks then I can stop worrying about transportation. we’ll see what happens, hope to hear from you.
