So how much will colleges really consider SAT writing this year?

I have a little dispute I am trying to settle with my parents. They tell me that the 800 I scored on the SAT writing section won't matter nearly as much (if at all) as my scores on the other 2 sections, in colleges' admissions decisions. On the other hand, after reading many threads on this topic from previous years, it seems to me as if at most colleges (except Georgetown), in the year 2010, SAT writing will matter just as much as the other sections. So my question is, in 2010, in relation to the other SAT sections, how much will colleges weigh my writing score?

(Before you tell me that you can easily find a thread on this (which I agree), I just want people to be aware that when you search for things in the forum it does not organize results by the most recent post date)

If there is a recent, informative thread on this topic, please, by all means, direct me to it. Thanks.

Some colleges do not consider the Writing section at all. Some consider it but give it less weight. Some consider the three sections equally.

I suppose I should be more specific. Let us take some of the schools that I am looking at, for example. How about Duke, Penn, Brown, Cornell and Williams. A fairly diverse group of schools, in my opinion. I have looked on these schools’ websites and all of them give the middle 50% for the writing section (whereas Georgetown still does not). But this does not indicate very much. Is there any further information out there on how these specific schools weigh each section of the SAT? It doesn’t even have to be something you can link to on the internet, but maybe a conversation you had with an admissions officer, etc…

You should probably email each school. I do recall reading, however, that Cornell does not consider the Writing section.

Try the schools common data set.No Duke though.

Penn. See “B” and “C” regarding “writing essay”.

Thanks to both of you. The common data set for all those schools is probably the most information one can get without actually knowing an admissions officer from a school. And silverturtle, you were right (unfortunately) about Cornell. They don’t give any stats for writing in their CDS. To shrinkrap: I did actually mean the University of Pennsylvania as opposed to Penn State, but I appreciate your help nonetheless.

“University of Pennsylvania as opposed to Penn State,”

^Ooops! People HATE that, right?

Haha ya

I mean I don’t go there (obviously), but I could see why I might if I did. That and people in Philly asking them if they go to Drexel.
