I know all these schools are reaches for anybody who apply, but i just want to know if my chance of getting in is “competitive” as others.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated and please by honest!

Current Institution: UC San Diego
Current Major: Mathematics/ Economics double major

-Applying for: Applied Math with a focus in econ or physics

-Predicted Fall Quarter GPA: 3.75-4.0 (16 units)
-College EC: I write short stories and haiku for fun and have couple awards from minor contests in Japan.)
-nothing else. (yeah…i know it’s pretty pathetic. I’m really struggling to find a niche here.)

-HS GPA: UW:3.72 W: 4.1-4.3 (Typical AP courseload)
-ACT: 32
-HS EC: Math teacher at my Japanese school
Varsity tennis player for all four years.(two MVP title, senior scholar athlete finalist)
I was basically one of those typical HS slackers who didn’t have a passion for learning.

If you need any more information, please ask.

It's incredibly hard to predict how it goes from year to year...but from experience and statistics, I can say that you have a pretty good shot at Northwestern, Columbia and Hopkins...the others are iffy just because they take so few. UChicago is 50-50.

^ I went to an uncompetitive public high school so getting "good grades" was easy, even with a menial effort. Besides it wasn’t so much about how well I did in school, but more about the attitude in which I approached it. I always did my hw/essay an hour before it was due, slept in class, invested all my times playing sport and video games, and never studied for an exam.
I definitely don't consider myself when i was in highschool as a superb student, nor do i consider my "achievement" commendable by any means.

Casey2889: Thanks for your incites! and no, I did not apply to any of these colleges in HS. (I'm pretty sure i would have been rejected by all of them if i did.)

Morgoth: Yes, I was already aware of Cornell's notorious admission rate for A&S. But despite its low percentage, do you think i still have a chance as good as any other competitive students?

Any other suggestion, opinion, or criticism? I would appreciate it if somebody can give me reference to some schools that offer an all-around liberal art education.

No idea of your chances. I guess with high scores, good reasons for wanting to go there, and good recs you will have as much chance as anyone else.

the CAS acceptance rate did go up this year, however a few percentage points doesn't make that much of an impact on the difficulty. i think you have as good a shot as anyone though.

Hey, that's cool. I'm kind of in a similar spot: student at UCSD (Marshall), 3.78 HS GPA, 2080 SAT, decent EC's, etc. I'm also trying to get out of La Jolla next fall, but I don't think I could make it into those top schools. I'm keeping my list to USC, BU, and some other easier schools. I really think we're at a disadvantage because it's so hard to get A's at UCSD but so easy at CC's. I think that if you're gonna go for the moon, and you really want out, then you gotta do some safety schools as well.
