Just curious. Good/bad? We're here to support each other through this process, after all.

And also, I have a question. Out of curiosity, when they assign interviews, do they try to match you up with an interviewer you have something in common with? Or is it just done at random?

My interviews so far (Hotchkiss, Taft, Choate) have gone wonderfully! I was so excited to be there that I think they were happy to talk to me :).

I’m not sure if they try to match you up with an interviewer based on your interests, but at Taft after the interview they really tried to find someone I could talk to who worked in a department I was interested in (I ended up talking to the drama teacher-he was really cool) So basically, I really appreciate them going the whole mile to find me someone to talk to.

That’s good. It’s great that even in a big school they still try to cater to your individual interests.

I’ve had all my interviews so far and I think they went well. At one in particular my interviewer and I really connected and we had a lot of similar views. She said I was “interesting” about 5 times–should I take that as a good sign?

If you both had things in common, I’m guessing she was genuinely interested in hearing more. ‘Interesting’ seems like a prompt to talk more about the same thing to me.

Have any interviews/interviewers made you love the school or hate it? Just wondering…

We were a little disappointed that our student wasn’t able to meet with the varsity coach in their major sport until in the midst of the parent interview we realized that the admissions interviewer WAS the varsity coach.

@Invent,
All my interviews were around 30 min. But length does not equal how well they went. My best interview was only around a half hour but it still was awesome.

Ds was in an interview this week that ran about 45 minutes. It was odd because another applicant left the room well after him and came back before him- finishing her interview in about 20 minutes. Ds said he kept thinking his interviewer was wrapping up, but then she’d go off on another tangent.

His shortest interview was about 15 minutes. The department head they had made an effort to tell us ds could meet with gave ds three minutes in the waiting room. Our tour guides were freshman who’d been at the school one month, and they only gave us half the usual tour. We were asked to wait for a new guide to show us the rest, but we were left waiting another 25-30 minutes before we finally decided to leave. They realized at that point that they’d forgotten about us (though the woman who “forgot” us was sitting in the same room?) but there was no apology offered to us. OTOH, the cocoa machine was nice. :)

Rellielou: I was trying to figure out what school you might be referring to in the above post, but the cocoa machine gave it away. My D just loved that little touch -creative marketing! Surprised at your experience, we actually had a really great afternoon there. Maybe they were just having a bad day.

Maybe it was a bad day there. Nobody we saw on campus looked happy. It’s funny, because our impression before the visit was quite positive. We’re not looking for perfection, but there were just so many small negatives that day that we couldn’t ignore them. YMMV, as they say, but we only have that one day to go by.

did any of your interviewers rush through the questions as if you were participating in a buzz quiz? i don’t like my Choate interviewer from last year.

My Andover interview went very well, I think! I just really clicked with the interviewer, and we talked for about 15 minutes about things completely unrelated to schoolwork or extracurriculars. The tour was fantastic, too, because I was paired with a dancer. I’ve been dancing for ages, so it was nice to talk to someone who really knows about the dance program.

It IS nice when interests match up. But a good interviewer/tour guide can do their job just fine whether or not they “match” the prospective student.

Man, I hardly ever check the “Cafe”…nearly missed this topic.

Our daughter has been in an interview that went 45 minutes, too. The rest were 30ish, and one (at the school which was the worst “fit”) was just 15.

Based on my reading of numerous posts by parents of current BS students, I would not read into anything you felt or that was said in the interview as either a positive or negative indication of the likelihood of admission. A buzzkill, I know, but those veteran parents have really put the fear into me.

I suggest instead that you think about those interviews that you felt went well as a sign of good “fit” with that school.

Seven-dont be too tearful. My d’s longest interview, very long, ended up being where she decided to go. For us it was the most perfect fit, but she had one interview that was under 20 minutes and she was accepted there also. Different interviewers do it differently. I also think it has to just do with timing. We had the last interview of the day and the AO just enjoyed the conversation and no one after us.

It’s a chance thing.

I totally agree with the aspect of fit and the reflection of the interview.

My hotchkiss interviewer was very strange. She talked to me then talked to my parents about my performance during the interview. She said I has very mature and good things but I found it odd. Did anyone elses interviewer do that?
