So I just applied Early Action to UNC Chapel-Hill...

Hey guys,

So I applied to University of North Carolina at Chapel-Hill this October 15 (the early action deadline). I wanted to know my chances, and also I had a few questions on the school. But first, here are my credentials, exactly as I put them on the Common Application.

Stats:
SAT: 1300/2040-- CR 670; Math 630; Writing 740 (just took the October SAT, haven't received yet)
GPA: ~3.9 unweighted, school doesn't weight
APs: English Lang (self-trained 3), AP Bio, AP Calc AB, AP Eng. Lit.
Honors: Geometry, Earth Science, Living Environment, Integrated Algebra, Global History, English 9
Major: Business Administration

Subjectives
ECs:
Community Service/Peer Mediation Certification- ~100 volunteer hours-including helping construct homes in a poor West-African village
Summer class at Emory U. for Experimental Economics

Model UN (1 of 6 selected for conference in Ghana and South Africa)
I do work on my dad's plantation and so I'm poised to take over his 20-acre rubber-tree plantation as soon as I finish college

Honors:
Principals Award 2x- awarded to a select few who show excellence in effort and attitude
Senator Greg Ball Honor Roll-awarded to those in NY state who show consistency in making High Honor roll status
Excellence Awards in various subjects-(Algebra II, English 10/11, African History, Sciences, many others)
National J. Honor Society

Essays and Recommendations:
Sent 1 pretty solid recommendation, wrote my common app essay on my experience transitioning from a 1st world country to a third world country and making the most out of it.

Background:
Senior, US citizen (lived in US for 15 years)
African-American male (URM)
Currently live in Ivory Coast in West Africa which is an extremely poor area, my school hasn't offered any APs or very many extracurricular activities as a result (yet it is considered the top school in Ivory Coast, will apply Early Action, only applicant from my school. I will apply for financial aid.

Questions:
Did applying Early Action at Chapel-Hill in any way affect my chances, and if so how? I've heard in some cases applying early goes against you because a lot of the most qualified students apply early so it's hard to stand out. Also, how important does Chapel-Hill consider the supplement Essay? I chose the topic of "What concerns me about my world and what do you plan to do to solve it?" what are the best ways to approach this type of essay? (just to see if I did it right) Do I have a chance at getting into this university Early Action?

Thanks to those who actually read all of this, I appreciate any responses given to this!

Bump…

So my son also applied early action. It’s hard to compare stats because you are international, but I know they say about “out of staters”…“Tough to get in unless you have a great jump shot”.
My son will be applying for aid also. His stats, sorry, are much higher. 35 ACT, 2250 sat, and 17 AP’s by graduation, 10 of which he has already scored a 5 on. He is also a national merit semifinalist, no doubt he’ll be a finalist. I tell you this only because even with these stats, we KNOW UNC is a long shot. BUT, you have an unusual back story, so you never know! Your SAT scores could be higher. Or try taking ACT, my son thought it was way easier.

Your stats are extremely impressive. I advise that you apply to other schools within the same tier as UNC (try University of Michigan). With UNC, it could go either way just because of how selective they are when it comes to Out of State applicants. But your stats make you an extremely competitive student. Rooting for you! Best of luck! Im West African as well!

Oh, thanks guys. Anyone else?

Btw @ZBD5421‌ on the UNC website, it states that applicants holding US Citizenship (which I have) are not part of the international pool. Anyways, bump… im really stressed!!!
