So I made a stupid mistake...

I'm applying to several different schools using the Common App, which I submitted about a month ago. I was looking through my apps today to look up some information, and I went to look at my Music Resume, and I realized that I accidently wrote that I have been studying piano since September 1991 instead of September 2001...I WASN'T EVEN ALIVE IN SEPTEMBER 1991!! I guess I'm hoping for reassurance, or at least advice as to how to remedy the situation. Do you think the schools will even notic/care? should I email or call to explain the error?

Thank you! Any guidance is much appreciated!

I just can't believe I did something so stupid, I must have read over that music resume about 20 times!

First of all, take a deep breath and relax. You made an honest mistake and want to correct it. If you take the initiative to bring it to their attention, I do not think they will hold it against you in this case because it is so obviously wrong. This might be a particularly difficult time of year to reach people, so I would suggest starting on the phone. If you reach an admissions rep, great, explain what happened and you are done with that one. If you get their voice mail, leave a message there and also send email. If you do not get an acknowledgment by phone or email within a few days after the start of their spring semester, try again.

thank you so much for the advice! i’ll do that right away!

When asking people to change information for you, it’s good to make it as easy as possible for them. With that in mind, I would attach a corrected copy of the music resume to your email (.pdf), and also possibly mail a hard copy, with a short note attached explaining that it is a corrected version of application material, as explained by phone/email on such-and-such a date. Your goal is to help the office get the corrected information into your file with a minimum of effort on their part.
